Professor Richard Dawkins, Emeritus Fellow of New College, Oxford, is one of the most influential science writers and communicators of our generation. He was the first holder of the Charles Simonyi Chair of the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford, a position he held from 1995 until 2008, and is Emeritus Fellow of New College, Oxford. His bestselling books include The Selfish Gene (1976), The Extended Phenotype (1982) and its sequel The Blind Watchmaker (1986), River Out of Eden (1995), Climbing Mount Improbable (1996), Unweaving the Rainbow (1998), A Devil's Chaplain (2004), The Ancestor's Tale (2004), and The God Delusion (2007). He has won many literary and scientific awards, including the 1987 Royal Society of Literature Award, the 1990 Michael Faraday Award of the Royal Society, the 1994 Nakayama Prize for Human Science, the 1997 International Cosmos Prize, and the Nierenberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest in 2009.

Even if you ascribe to the organism level side of the debate I think you can't help but like this book.

I experienced Dawkins's writing in reverse order. I had enjoyed all of his books and this was the last one that I read. This book being his first book it maybe a bit odd that I got to reading it last but it was still educational and this revised version is excellent. He includes small updates from his later works giving new depth to a game changing argument for the gene centered view of evolution by natural selection. In my biology classes having experienced so much of RD's thought on the subject before having the formal education I was able to see clearly so many things that I think would have been difficult to conceptualize. If you have never read the Selfish Gene before you will love this book at least if you love science.

Notable update to a classic ...

This is the '40th Anniversary' edition of the book ... but not exactly a new edition. It's a volume that actually contains the 2nd edition of the book, with revisions and the prefaces and forwards. It adds a new epilogue for this edition, as well as two chapters from a different book "The Extended Phenotype". Thus the new title "The Extended Selfish Gene". Having read the first edition 40 years ago, this re-read was somewhat nostalgic and a reminder of how controversial the original was. This was never a technical book on genetics, but an argument for an interpretation of the process of natural selection at the gene level. Many technical and popular reviewers at the time imposed some personal and wrong-headed interpretations to the meaning of the term 'selfish' gene, to which this edition is a counterargument. Perhaps the most interesting parts of the book are in fact the endnotes to each chapter, and should be read as noted when they occur. These provide more of the historical changes.

Needless to say perhaps, but as the 'modern synthesis' provided a new context to Darwin's ideas when the gene was explored scientifically, the concept of the selfish gene has become even more important with the rigorous sequencing of the full genome of viruses, bacteria, higher organisms and humans, and the discovery of regulatory genetic elements.

The New Teaching Standard in Dermatopathology

This book redefines the standard for basic level dermatopathology textbooks. This second edition is larger than the first and hence the images are better portrayed. The powerpoint lectures are all new and run flawlessly. They really add so much more to the text and static images in the book. There are many more images presented online, all easily downloadable to add to any dermpath presentation you might be making. The images in the book are all annotated and the text is presented in the main as bullet points which facilitates learning at a junior level but makes a discussion of contentious areas more difficult. Nonetheless you wont regret having this book in your collection.

Perfect for those of us not so great in surgical pathology

This is a pretty amazing book. Some of us are totally illiterate and/or have little time to read. This is one of the most readable books I've encountered during my pathology residency. It's awesome for those of us who want a brief overview and develop basic but through knowledge of derm path. Good images and text not so concise that you won't understand anything but just with the right amount of detail.

David Wallace Croft is a Java software architect with a professional background in Java game development. He formerly served as the president of the Silicon Valley Java Users Group and is the founder of the Game Developers Java Users Group. Croft earned his bachelor's degree from the United States Air Force Academy in 1990 and his master's degree from the California Institute of Technology in 1995.

After a brief career in neural network chip design, he joined an online Internet multiplayer game startup in 1996 and has been programming in Java exclusively ever since. While writing this book, Croft taught Java 2D game programming within the Institute of Interactive Arts & Engineering program at the University of Texas at Dallas. In 2004, he transitioned from faculty to student and is now pursuing a doctorate in cognition and neuroscience in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at the same university. Horrible book

This has to be one of the worst programming books I've seen. I've been coding in java for a few years and recently got interested in trying to write some 2D games for fun so I got this book.

The book is only useful if you want to know about the authors 2D game framework (which is horrible by the way) otherwise its useless. You won't learn much about 2d graphics in java, how to deal with images best (such as volatile images vs managed images) or anything else that is useful when trying to write a game.

Also its beyond me why the example games are so awful....you'd think if you were trying to show off your framework you'd actually make something that was nice..instead of completely hideous.

A much better book is "Kill Game Programming in java" by Andrew Davison.

I accidentally bought this book when I went to purchase Killer Game Programming in Java (Fan Book). After reading the other reviews and not finding a refund button. I decided to read through it anyway.

I was very underwhelmed. I would not call myself an advanced level programmer, yet this book had nothing to teach me. The text was largely composed of waffle and filler. :-/

Gripping Mix of Sci-Fi and Technology!

I was pleasantly surprised with Legend of Xaloria. The lively characters and mysterious disappearance of Kari draw you right into the action and keep you turning the pages until the end sneaks up on you. Jake is the main character. He is a teenager who creates Virtual Reality games in this futuristic tale. His best friends, Des and Kari, finally get to test his game only to find it more addictive than they could have ever imagined. When Kari disappears, Jake thinks it may be related to the glitches in his game somehow and he and Des vow to find Kari before something terrible happens. What ensues is a series of actions that any adventure lover will happily go along with.
I enjoy reading many different kinds of books and found this one to be a satisfying mix of contemporary fiction and sci-fi whimsy. This book is well written with a surprising twist ending that you’re sure to enjoy. I was pleased to read this author’s work and look forward to reading more in the future.

An interesting premise, with interesting characters.

The action is lacking in some places, but it's interesting enough to not be a problem. The "Otherland" series by Tad Williams is a clear inspiration, but it lacks its wealth of details.

Might be okay for a 10 year old...

Put plainly, this book might be enjoyable for very young readers, but not for teens or adults. I'm not sure why it has so many four and five star reviews. The plot is simplistic and the characters are one dimensional and uninteresting. I'm a huge fan of science fiction and the litRPG sub-genre, but I strongly recommend anyone that looks for engaging characters with sensible motivations and depth to look elsewhere. Try The Dragon's Wrath by Brent Roth, The Way of the Shaman by Vasily Mahanenko, The Land: Founding by Aleron Kong, the excellent novel The Gam3: Opening Moves by Cosimo Yap, or Project Daily Grind by A. Osadchuck for excellence in the litRPG genre. Do not waste your money here.
