Memoirs of a True American Hero of WWII

In this book, General Gavin tells the story of the "All-American" 82d Airborne Division during WWII. He is best suited to provide this history since he served with the Division during its entire participation in the European Campaign, starting as a Regimental Commander with the 505th to eventually commanding the unit.
General Gavin gives a detailed description of all the operations the 82d participated in during WWII, and adds his analysis of why certain things went well for his unit, while other things were a struggle. I found his analysis of the German's lack of will to particpate in hand-to-hand combat fascinating. Especially since I have not seen this perspective in other WWII books that I have read. Additionally, he provides insight into the Allied command structure and the challenges it faced.

I really enjoyed this book because General Gavin provides a unique perspective of the war, much different than other general officers. Due to the nature of airborne operations, Gavin personally experienced the harshness and challenges of WWII combat. Additionally, he participated in numerous high-level planning sessions with other well-known leaders of the Allied Command. Thus, he can connect the cause and effect of how strategic decisions influenced the actual combat operations in the ETO. General Gavin also gives his analysis of the Allied decision to concede Berlin to the Russians - pretty interesting stuff, especially given the long-term impact that this decision had on world events.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in WWII history. For those wanting to learn more about the 82d, or airborne operation - this is required reading. If General Bradley is known as the Soldier's General, then General Gavin should be known as the Paratroopers General. No one knew airborne operations better, and no general had a greater influence on his men and the battles they fought than "Jumping Jim" Gavin.

A Real American Hero

On to Berlin is possibly the best autobiography on WWII, right up there with Hans von Luck's Panzer Commander. Gavin was with the 82nd Airborne during all of the war, from Sicily, to Salerno, D-Day, Holland, the "Bulge" and the Hurtgen forest. He is excellent in describing the operations of the 82nd as it fought it's way through Normandy and Operation Market Garden, and tells the forgotten story of the 82nd during the Battle of the Bulge, for which the 101st usually gets the glory. Gavin also discusses the development of Airborne warfare, from early troubles in Sicily to the massive drop over Holland. He also talks about his disagreements with Eisenhower for playing politics with the British and thus prolonging the war. As the youngest general of the war, he was bold, decisive and brilliant in his tactics. Known as the "Jumpin' General", Gavin always accompanied his troops into battle and always was at the front line. I highly recommend this book. The reader will get to know one the real great heroes of World War Two, who doesn't get nearly enough credit for all he accomplished.

About the Author
William A. McEachern began teaching large sections of economic principles shortly after joining the University of Connecticut, and a several years later he began offering teaching workshops around the country. The University of Connecticut Alumni Association conferred on him its Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award in 2000. He earlier won the Association's award for Distinguished Public Service. Professor McEachern has published books and monographs on public finance, public policy, and industrial organization. His research has also appeared in edited volumes, such as READINGS IN PUBLIC CHOICE ECONOMICS (University of Michigan Press), INTERNATIONAL HANDBOOK ON TEACHING AND LEARNING ECONOMICS (Edward Elgar Publishing), and RETHINKING ECONOMIC PRINCIPLES (Irwin Publishing), and in a variety of refereed journals, including ECONOMIC INQUIRY, NATIONAL TAX JOURNAL, QUARTERLY REVIEW OF ECONOMIC AND BUSINESS, JOURNAL OF INDUSTRIAL ECONOMICS, KYKLOS, ECON JOURNAL WATCH, and PUBLIC CHOICE. He is the founding editor of THE TEACHING ECONOMIST, a newsletter that for more than two decades has focused on teaching economics at the college level. excellent textbook - won't buy it from amazon again

This is a text book that had to have. I do like the format, the review pages, and the low cost. However, I won't buy a textbook from Amazon again. It took almost three full weeks to get it on the FREE super saver (5-8 days shipping). They don't tell you that they don't have the book and it may take another 5-8 days before they get it so they can ship it to you. I lamost flunked out of the class waiting for the book.

I received the book right on time. It was packaged fairly decently. The book itself is readable. The chapters get right to the point. It's written in plain English with no hard to understand terms and definitions. The pull out cards are a great reference tool and sum up the chapters nicely. Five stars!

Good text

This textbook is good for learning microeconomics on your own. I used it for an Internet class, and I did fine. The textbook is not complicated, but I am a mechanical engineering student, so it could be my experience with math and physics texts that affects this. My class only covered to chapter 17, so I can't write about the rest of the chapters; they are probably good as well.

This book provides an introduction to economics, an intro. to the market system, it covers the market structure and pricing (monopolies, perfect competition, etc.), resource markets, market failure and public policy, and international microeconomics.

The book also comes with note cards for each chapter. New textbooks (or used if the access code was not used I think) also provide Internet extras like quizzes and videos.

The one thing I did not like was the many and sometimes too large pictures. It seemed as a way to keep your attention on the book, but students reading this material should be mature enough to not require such things. It reminded me of a high school or middle school textbook; not the material, but the pictures.

But as I said, this is a good text.

Great Literature Review

This is probably the best literature review/textbook of osteoarthritis I have seen, and is definitely worth the price. Hopefully some of my research will be in here someday. :)

About the Author
Konami Kanata (pen name used by Kanata Konami) was born on July 3, 1958, in Nagano, Japan.  A veteran manga artist Konami made her professional debut in 1982 with the serialized comic Petit Cat Jam-Jam for Kodansha's semenal shoujo manga magazine NakaYoshi. The daughter of an elementary school teacher, most of Konami's stories are for readers of all ages making her one of the most accessible artists in recent history.

In her nearly thirty year career, Konami has penned more than a dozen comic series, with the majority of them focusing on cats and pets. Konami is well regarded within the pet-manga community for her keen sense of cat ecology. Her ability to observe and render feline behavior has earned her respect from the Japanese manga community as a whole. While most of her properties were published for a younger female demographic, her most recent series Chi's Sweet Home is currently being published by Kodansha's Morning magazine, Japan's leading comic magazine for adult readers. A incredibly well done and emotional conclusion to the Chi's Sweet Home series!

This was an excellent conclusion to the Chi’s Sweet Home series. My whole family has loved reading this very cute seinen manga featuring a young family with an inquisitive cat.

Chi has finally realized that the grey striped cat is her mom. This happens right around the same time her human family realizes that missing cat posters are looking for Chi. The family is torn; should they bring Chi back to her original home? Or do they keep her with them? They are relocating to France and need to decide before they make the move. Yohei, their toddler, is dead set against losing his best friend. In the end the only one who can make the decision is Chi herself.

This was a surprisingly tense and emotional Chi’s Sweet Home. Chi has to make a tough choice: live with her siblings and mom or live with the human family she loves. Chi is just as cute as ever, but there definitely isn’t a lot of humor in here.

Normally I say that this manga is for all ages; but there are a couple scenes in here that might be a little intense for very young readers. There is a scene where Chi’s kitty mom protects Chi and is injured which had my eight year old very concerned. Then at the end Chi is racing against time to get where she wants to be; this scene again had my son very upset because he was very concerned Chi wouldn’t make it home in time. These scenes are both intense and very sweet. To be honest everyone in the family was a bit emotional over the outcome; we have just grown to love this family and little cat so much.

As with all the other volumes this one is well illustrated and has beautiful pastel colors and incredibly cute kitties. We really enjoyed the illustration. This volume does wrap up the Chi’s Sweet Home series very nicely. Although to be honest we were all a bit disappointed and sad to see it end.

The only thing that wasn’t wrapped up was some of the side character plots. All of us wanted to know; what about Cocchi? Will he be alone forever?

Overall a spectacular wrap up to the Chi’s Sweet Home series; really really well done. This is an excellent seinen manga that cat lovers of all ages will enjoy. I highly recommended it. Now can we please see a spin-off series where Cocchi gets some resolution too? Pretty Please?

An emotional and satisfying conclusion

As someone who's been reading this since the series started in the U.S., it's sad to see it come to an end, but at least this is a satisfying and emotional conclusion to what has been a wonderful and warm series.

In this final volume, Chi finds herself caught between two worlds, as she must choose between her human family (the Yamadas), and her birth mother and siblings. The Yamadas are about to move to Paris, and they must also decide what is best for the little kitten that has become a part of their family. This is somewhat of a more dramatic volume than previous, as there are no kitty hijinks to be found here. It's focused solely on the characters, and the decisions that they have to make that will effect their lives forever.

Konami Kanata has shown a real gift for blending humor with emotion during the course of the comic, and that's no more evident than here. We feel for these characters, and we sympathize, because there are no right and wrong answers. No matter what is decided for Chi's future, someone will be hurt. But don't worry. It all ends happily in the end, and we even get a nice little special epilogue that shows where the characters ended up.

As a long-time cat owner, this has been a wonderful find, and I have enjoyed following the adventures of Chi and her friends. It not only understands the nature of cats, but has more human emotion than you might expect.

I didn't realize that this was the final volume of Chi's Sweet Home! I'm sad that this amazing series is over but it has been a fun adventure and journey for us (the readers), Chi, and the Yamada family. The art is amazing as always! :) I love that this comic is in colour! I haven't seen many comics that are printed in colour! I love the water colours used in this story! I hope others enjoy this comic too! :)

well-written and compelling

Well-written, compelling...and five months later, still dying for ep 2.

FORECAST (potential spoilers) :

* her father's a demon.
* he was conducting human sacrifice and was going to sacrifice her, but instead, her mother made a deal to protect her.
* as a result, she was saved from all the horrible things, thus being called a Lady Saint.
* it's her half-demon side which can see Noah for who he truly is (and what he truly looks like.)
* once he helps her to remember what actually happened, she realizes who and what she is.
* released from the burden of being a Lady Saint, she's finally able to be free and happy.

Worth the Read

This book has been a help to me. I did as the author suggested and read the book cover-to-cover, then went back and worked through some of the exercises in the downloaded workbook. As a little background, I am a nearly-hopelessly left-brained thinker. Having been in management positions in my working life, control is my middle name. Since reading this book and working on exercises, I've been able to improve two areas of my golf game: imagination and commitment. By imagination, I mean being able to "see" the shot I intend and keep that picture in mind as I prepare to swing. I play catch frequently with my sons and I think of my intended or pictured golf shot to be much like when I intend to throw a curve or slider. If I intend to hit a low draw, then I picture it and swing the swing I feel will give me that shot. That also ties into commitment. Once I decide to hit a particular shot, my whole focus is on hitting that shot. That attitude keeps me committed to the exact shot I want and my results, especially as I get close to or on the green, frequently amaze me. Why only four stars then? In my case, a lot of the information is not new; I'm simply doing it now. Also, I found some of the exercises in the workbook to be moderately to non-helpful, perhaps a bit too "new-age" for an old guy like me.

Great little book!

Great little book that improves your thinking on the golf course. Especially like the section on self talk, listening to people after reading this book has opened my eyes to just how negative people can be. I now have a very much " can do " attitude, have become more organised and have been hitting some great golf shots!!! Thank you Sue !!

Changed my game immediately

I will always be grateful to Sue Wieger for writing this wonderful book. Chapter One (titled "Your WHY of Golf") by itself is worth much more than the price of this book. Sue offers an exercise that invites you to explore the reasons why you play golf and what you really enjoy about playing golf. This exercise is powerful, beyond what I could have imagined.

I love playing golf but I was also feeling way too much stress and frustration about this great game. Sue asks this question in her book: "Are you playing the game of golf or working at the game of golf?"

After doing the exercise to identify my WHYS of playing golf, I made a decision to play without keeping score for a while. What a difference it made! I am more relaxed on the golf course and I am enjoying the game more than ever. In addition, I am hitting better shots. Sue explains that your peak performance is tied into being congruent with your WHY. It's true.

By the way, Sue isn't suggesting that everyone stop keeping score. Everybody's WHYS are different and what matters is that you are true to yourself and take actions consistent with your WHYS.

Every golfer, regardless of skill level, can benefit from this book. I highly recommend it.
