probably meant for 3-4 year olds.

I felt this book was easier than I hoped it would be. I originally bought it for my 1st grader to see roughly how he might do when GATE tested this year. When he blew through it, I gave it to my 4 year old who also completed it easily by himself. It was a bit expensive so I was hoping that there would be challenges that we could discuss and work through together. However, I give it 5 stars anyway because the boys enjoyed it and it kept their attention. If you think your child is developing for the magnet program, I would recommend this book for 3-4 year olds.

I and my son really like the this book

I and my son really like the this book. I am trying to help my 4 year old son get ready for his g&t exam. I like the fact that the questions in here to make him think. We have been doing section by section. It's colorful and he enjoys doing it. It is so important to get him familiar with questions. I think that helps a lot. I also bought the NNAT book from this publisher. I would recommend this.

Incredibly expensive for what you get...I paid about $25. My 4 year old loved the questions but also said that these questions were not like the ones she had on the actual g&t test.

Accidental or Intentional - Highly Recommended Read

Cammy lays it all out for you from what you can do right now to design better e-learning to resources to help you progress from accidental to intentional designer.

I couldn't put this book down once I started reading it. I too started out as an accidental instructional designer without the “requisite” degree and Cammy reminded me that I am not alone in that experience. Every chapter contains relevant knowledge that excites your brain (and heart) with material you can use to design your next course. From AIDA (not the opera) to seductive e-learning, you will walk away with actionable items that you can/will/want to incorporate in your next design project. After just the first reading, I am eager to join the “collective discovery” that is instructional design, accidentally and intentionally.

Instructional designers and eLearning managers can learn something from Cammy Bean's book

Here's a question for the eLearning managers out there: How many members of your instructional design team got involved in the field by accident? As the demand for training within organizations, professional associations, industries, and businesses continues to outpace the supply of formally credentialed instructional designers, individuals with diverse backgrounds and skill sets are often recruited or incidentally assimilated into the professional ranks.

I'd venture to say that no two instructional designers start their career in the same way, but that's OK! In fact, it's part of why I was so excited to attend Cammy Bean's keynote address at the recent Chicago eLearning Showcase. Cammy's message fit well with the theme of her new book, The Accidental Instructional Designer: Learning Design for the Digital Age, which is an important read for both managers and instructional designers alike. I am promoting the book (despite considering Cammy a "frenemy") because it represents the eLearning journey many of us have been on since the beginning of this century. The accidental aspect of our careers is symbolic of the life-long learning journey most adults should ready themselves for. In fact, those of us connected to new media have been required to learn new professions inside and outside the traditional schooling system. As Cammy notes in the opening chapter of her book, when you leave "the academy of instructional design," you discover that "in practice, instructional designer is an umbrella term that covers a whole slew of people and jobs."

The book takes on various topics from the perspective project managers, subject matter experts, designers, writers, and other stakeholders whom are necessary to create eLearning products. Cammy focuses on four core skill sets eLearning initiatives need to draw upon to be successful. Using the concept of a pie, she explains the importance of learning theory, creativity, technology, and business acumen as part of a holistic model that puts the role of an instructional designer into perspective.

When one looks at their role this context, they take total responsibility for the product. This is a refreshing attitude compared to old-fashioned instructional design curriculum where too much emphasis was placed on focusing on "needs analysis" and writing instructional objectives. While solid task analysis and pedagogy is important, it is not the only "design" consideration when technology and business goals are involved.

Cammy uses this approach as a launching point for a discussion of best practices in a variety of areas. Good intentions will only carry an instructional designer so far on any given eLearning project, so I was delighted to see her touch on each topic by identifying pressure points where instructional design mistakes can be made, and then offer solutions to help make sure best practices form the foundation any initiative. Even the fundamental elements of the profession are explained and explored with a practical message in mind. Cammy doesn't mince words when discussing ADDIE on pg. 33 of her book:

"... there's nothing special about ADDIE or even anything customized about it that helps you build better "instruction." That's because ADDIE isn't a design model; it's a project management model. It says, `Do these things in this order,' while telling you nothing about how to make your project sing and dance and come alive. That's why so many designers, especially those new to ISD, are sort of adrift. ADDIE is a big black box when it comes to the actual design part."

On this point I will offer a quick response. This PM framework probably developed because far too many ISD people are required to act as a PM--corralling experts, programmers, project sponsors, etc. to meet deadlines. This is especially true in higher education, where department deans expect an instructional designer to actually have some clout over a professor. Whatever the context, we all struggle with the endeavor of dealing with the EXPERT, and I appreciate the coverage the book gives this subject. It's nothing against subject matter experts and professors, of course. It's just that they are often not paid enough (if at all), and if they are truly an expert they will not have the right amount of time to devote to your project. Cammy's book does a great job of providing practical tips on how to improve collaboration with the expert. Check: discuss the process and roles, establish yourself as an "ISD expert," agree to a schedule (good luck with that one), make sure your deliverables are visual, and provide leadership by educating the expert on good design (context, chunking, concise). Double Check. Cammy's list of questions to ask the expert should hang on all of our bulletin boards.

The cover of Cammy Bean's book, The book also covers the instructional design ABC's quite well and provides the "digital age" perspective we so badly need. Her "Show-me, Try it, Test me" concept, although reminiscent of Horton's eLearning by Design tomb (the learner Absorbs, Does, Connects) helps embed the basics to guide the designer and team. The book's coverage of "finding a hook" and explaining the interactivity continuum is an outstanding overview using both ample theory and practice experience. Here we learn:

Avoid Bling for the sake of Bling
If the Bling motivates the learner ... well, good
Make sure the activity makes the learner think
Encourage the learner to practice what they have learned
Use scenarios that put the learner in a context
Encourage reflection
Help the learner connect

Later chapters in the book focus on the need for good writing style and strong visuals. I appreciate the many examples Cammy shares from her real world experience as an instructional designer. She weaves her personal journey as an accidental instructional designer into every topic, which adds a nice personal touch and becomes a disarming device for anyone who might otherwise be intimidated to explore the field. She even covers the "Secret Handshake of Instructional Design" in Chapter 11 of the book and provides a list of important topics and theories to explore.

There are plenty of other little nuggets for eLearning managers, too. Have you ever thought to recommend the classic Attention, Interest, Desire, Action (AIDA) copywriting model to your ISD team? Have you ever explicitly warned your team to avoid the trap of "clicky-clicky bling-bling" interactivities? Or told members to see themselves as learning mixologists who look for the right blends of techniques and tools to support the needs of the client, rather than bartenders who pour out the same old pre-packaged e-learning over and over?

This would make a great textbook if the sub-title contained the word "on-demand" in it. I liked it so much I purchased a copy for our five instructional designers. There is an irony in Cammy's sophisticated approach as she is well known for her conference sessions on Articulate, the tool that brought us mundane eLearning, but nevertheless this is a must-read book for anyone involved with creating on-demand eLearning modules. It serves as a good reminder that the journey of an instructional designer can start anywhere, but it never has to end.

Disappointing

Disappointing. Not worth my time or money. Written in a colloquial style that was soft on "hard" info and overdone in personal anecdotes, I found myself wishing I could return this. It reminds me of a version of saying, "most books should be magazine articles, and most magazine articles should be tweets."

Great tax book to use for a better understanding of personal taxes

I really enjoyed this book. The writing style makes understanding these tax topics very easy. I would recommend this book to anyone that is looking to save money on their personal taxes.

The Kindle version was neat because there are many links to websites for use as reference and resource. Therefore reading from a smart device allows you to be more interactive with the book and deepen your experience.

Eva Rosenberg has taken a topic that is core to tax law and of interest to all taxpayers and presented in an understandable and in plain English and put deductions at the fingertips of the taxpayer/reader and if used in conjunction with a professional (EA or CPA or tax attorney) and legally minimize taxes rather than being creative and gamble with the IRS's scrutiny. The book is instructive and understandable and will help readers to understand and implement. I have great admiration for someone who can master an area of subject mater such as tax laws and distill it to understandable form and present it to readers a fine book. Eva has done just that! This book has wealth of information in user friendly language that tells you succinctly in concise manner the how to deduct and write-off expenses and use legal loopholes and credits etc to minimize taxes. It is must read for all interested in legally lowering taxes and good desk reference for tax professionals.

Grade 2 Up–When doctors told Lin and her husband that a cure for cancer was his greatest hope of survival, they decided to raise money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Lin called upon fellow children's book authors and illustrators, and a project was born–each one would decorate a wooden snowflake that was then auctioned, raising over $100,000. Someone suggested that the snowflakes be put into a book, and Robert's Snowflakes was created (proceeds from this book go to the institute). Featuring reproductions of work by Eric Carle, David Shannon, Emily Arnold McCully, Eric Rohmann, Denise Fleming, Ian Falconer, and Lin herself, the book is a handsome showcase of art. The artist and the medium are listed at the bottom of the pages. Wintry haiku nicely complement the snowflakes. The endpapers feature tiny replicas of even more snowflakes, which will have children running to the Web site to see the complete archive. PreS-K. As Lin explains in her introduction, shortly after she and Mercer were married, he was diagnosed with bone cancer, and from that experience came the book Robert's Snow (2004). When the cancer reoccurred, they used the book as an inspiration for a fundraiser for Mercer's experimental treatment. Children's book artists painted wooden snowflakes, which were auctioned off, the proceeds going to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (as do 100 percent of this book's royalties).This small, lovely book reproduces the snowflakes, sets them against vividly colored backgrounds, and offers short poems here and there about snow. Most of the snowflakes appear five or six to a spread, which occasionally seems crowded, given the small, horizontal format of the book. But some snowflakes get their own page: Graeme Base fills a snowflake with a leopard's face; Mark Teague's features a little dino; Tony's DiTerlizzi's top-hatted spider has legs stretched on every point. Densie Fleming, David McPhail, David Shannon, and Steven Kellogg are among the other contributors. Lots to look at here. Ilene Cooper

Wonderful

The snowflakes created by children's book illustrators to raise money for cancer research are breathtakingly beautiful. I was lucky enough to purchase an actual snowflake in last year's auction, and spent much time online looking at all of the snowflakes, wising I could buy them all! I was delighted when the snowflakes were published in a book. When I got the book I was a wee bit disappointed to realize that only a portion of the snowflakes made the book (and alas, not the one I purchased), but it is still a gorgeous book with very clear reproductions of the artwork. If you are a children's book lover, an art lover, or simply want to support a cause to raise money for cancer research, you will enjoy this book.

I am so happy I bought this book. The concept behind it is beautiful. I also purchased Robert's Snow (Grace Lin) for my class (and daughter). I'm hoping next winter we can use both books in a more extended experience. LOVE IT!

This is a good book to give as a keepsake for those who have fought or are fighting cancer. As an elementary school teacher I know most of the illustrators in this little book. I have given it to friends who would also appreciate the drawings along with the thought in which it was given.

Excellent reference book

Excellent reference book. Very effective tool to accelerate productivity of interns and new graduates and as a refresher/quick reference guide for specific EE topics for seasoned engineers (when working outside of your daily speciality.) It goes straight to the point, no-BS, giving a quick answer to common problems, so you can quickly get back to solving your real problem!

I was initially reluctant to purchase a book, when the internet makes searching so easy! However, there is just so much BAD information out there, that finding a quick answer to a typical EE question can be challenging, and definitely results in a waste of time. Mr. Eisenbeis’ book was recommended as a solution by a colleague, and it has proven invaluable!

The presentation of the information is presented in a straight-forward manner, using the standard terminology used in the industry, without a lot of theory or hyperbole found in EE college text books. The layout of the book makes it easy to quickly find an answer, or to simply refresh your memory on a specific topic, that challenges engineers during every design effort. This resource allows your young engineers to quickly find information on how things are typically done in the industry, allowing them to more quickly become productive as they acclimate to the real-life work of an electronic engineer, which is not generally what most students expect.

I have also found this book to be rather valuable to my mechanical engineers, providing them some much needed insight to the issues faced by their EE counterparts, particularly about how their mechanical designs affect the electronic performance (such as shock and vibration can induce actual electronic problems such as through piezoelectric effect).

Great set of books.

My 2 1/2 year old daughter loves the Pinkalicious series of books and particularly loves this set of 4. Previous to receiving this set we only read the "I Can Read" series which have great illustrations and fun storylines but the stories are not always fleshed out; on occasion they can end rather abruptly. These 4 books are slightly longer and seem to be more developed. As a mom, I particularly love Pinkalicious as it details her slightly "bratty" behavior before she turns her attitude around. However, the bratty behavior is displayed in a cute way and my daughter seems to enjoy the silliness of it. Silverlicious is also a great book that teaches about appreciation. Overall, these 4 are my favorite of the Pinkalicious books we own.

Pinkalicious set

The little girls just LOVE these books. I've only read one of them so far, with a six-year-old girl in a one-on-one reading program. Fun characters, very imaginative, fun illustrations, good message. The six-year-old could read most of it (she just finished first grade) and said she wished she could take it home. When I bought the set to give her the one she wanted and donate the others, several other little girls swarmed in and wanted to read them.

Through incisive analyses of the many accounts and investigations in the years since the shooting, Zelizer reveals how journalists used the assassination not just to relay the news but to address the issues they saw as central to the profession and to promote themselves as cultural authorities. A former reporter for the Reuters News Agency and an assistant professor of rhetoric and communications, Zelizer asks why the news media, trained to present information in narrative form, spend so much time defending their coverage of the assassination of President Kennedy. She suggests that since no journalist in Dallas at the time actually saw the shooting, each one instead strives for acceptance as an authority in the creation of a national collective memory, which is more emotional than the journalistic story. She details this legitimizing process in an interesting and useful scholarly book that is more for media experts than Kennedy assassination groupies.

Don't be Put Off by Overuse of the Word "Discourse"

There is some very significant baby in this academese- obscurantist bathwater.

Basically this is an instiutional approach to explaining why the media got it wrong. Does the author put it like this? Not exactly. The woman needs a job!

She argues that the Kennedy Assasination took place at a key time for TV news; in 1963 the networks had just switched form a 15 minute to a half-hour broadcast. The assassination, she argues, made TV news. The later you get the more reporters and editors interjected what they were doing at the time; thier identities and the legitimacy of TV journalism itself had become married to a single bullet, even though it was much more of a shotgun wedding.

Some of the narrative desriptions of individual reporters are priceless. Zelizer does a masterful job of capturing the chaos of the telphone truck, where there was only one phone. Sometimes these narratives of direct reporter experience seem to yearn for conclusions beyone those modest ones that the professor presents.

Don't be put off by the cumbersome style of this book. It is worth reading twice. It goes far toward explaining why the Corporate Media have worked so dilligently to cast Warren Commission Sceptics in such a condescending light. Just so, those aristocratic flat-earthers!

This book is simply too dangerous to be written clearly.
