Refreshing and still a classic

From my own experience, I've always been frustrated with the tendency of the architecture community to either completely overlook the aesthetic works of the great structural engineers or shamelessly claim them as their own. This book is beyond a simple consensus of great engineering works; it is Billington's clear and rational case for the distinction of the discipline of Structural Art - the engineer's means of expression - from that of Architecture.

This book is just the thing any student or young professional in structural engineering should have along with their library of technical books. Instead of explaining the aesthetics and beauty of structures in vague architectural terms, Billington looks at them in terms of the technical (formwork, stress diagrams, material economy, etc.). When has an architectural critic discussed the elegance behind a moment diagram?

I think anyone who loves architecture and great works of engineering will appreciate this book. If you like this, I would also recommend Billington's 'Robert Maillart and the Art of Reinforced Concrete' and Salvadori's 'Why Buildings Stand Up'.

Detailed exploration of Structural Art

Billington goes through the evolution of structural art/expressionism in great detail. It is helpful to have a preexisting knowledge about the various engineers/artist discussed in this text, however, it is not necessary. This book is very interesting and encourages the engineer to consider the aesthetic consequences of structures.
It is an inspiring book to read (and re-read) and is packed full of historical bridges and other structures (like thin concrete shells). I highly recommend it to engineering students with an interest in structures.

As a horse racing fan and equestrian enthusiast there are many horses that stand out to me as most remarkable athletes within their chosen field; whether that be jumping over the highest of fences at Hickstead or the Eventing dream ride for Piggy French at Badminton horse trials, I could quite easily make a list of top racehorses that have gone down in history books as world-class greats. Paul Nicholls is an incredible and well established racing trainer whose horse Kauto Star has really stood out as an impressive creature, winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice in a row. His noble face makes for a striking front cover to this autobiography of a most remarkable man, who had what he calls a `lucky break' in his training career and something which I feel is most deserved. This narrative is an honest account of Paul Nicholl's astonishing transformation from a keen pony lover and amateur jockey to a record breaking champion horse trainer, with over one thousand seven hundred winners over jumps. He stands at the very pinnacle of the sport with many big-race victories including those achieved by two stand-out horses; Kauto Star and Denman (also known affectionately as `the tank'). Fast-paced and exciting you are taken on a most extraordinary journey from Gymkhana's at the Pony Club and pony racing on flighty little animals to when Paul's dreams of becoming a jockey were crushed due to his weight and the years of torment when he rode at two stone under his natural weight. This determined and single-minded man then turned to the training of these magnificent creatures and started up a yard from nothing, with eight horses and very small savings alongside limitless ambition and willpower. The rivalry between Martin Pipe (another incredible trainer) and Paul is explained in all intensity, as too is the story of my two favorite racehorses who won the Gold Cup at Cheltenham three times between them.
This is a compelling and truly fascinating sports biography that is uplifting, enthusing and thought-provoking to the core about a man who fought hard to get to the top. About the Author
A former journalist and communication professor, John McManus writes and lectures about changes in news media and their impact on democracy. His 1994 book, "Market-Driven Journalism: Let the Citizen Beware?" won the annual research award from the Society of Professional Journalists. So did his 2009 college textbook, "Detecting Bull: How to Identify Bias and Junk Journalism in Print, Broadcast and on the Wild Web." In 2000, he founded GradeTheNews.org. Using Consumer Reports as a model, the project scientifically sampled the most popular newspapers and newscasts in the San Francisco Bay Area and rated them head-to-head on seven yardsticks of journalism quality. Grade the News was funded by the Gerbode, Knight and Ford Foundations and received both national and regional awards.

Great news literacy resource

John McManus' deep understanding of both journalism and of the type of critical inquiry and reflection that is at the heart of media literacy is clearly visible on every page of this work. It is absolutely packed with news literacy examples and insights. I'd expect nothing less from the man who was behind Grade the News. And don't be fooled by the self-published thing; That was a political decision. This is no vanity piece and it would absolutely meet the quality standards of any major publisher. I highly recommend it.

I would have bought this book, but his academic credentials and the tone of his first few pages suggest he only believes in Right Wing bias. Are there any examples of left wing bias?? He is also a self proclaimed social justice advocate--code language for 'hard-core liberal'. I think I'll wait for something and someone less biased to come along.

Halo guide truly helpfull.

When I heard about this product, I immediately purchased it without hesitation. I was worried at first that I didn't think about it first and it wouldn't satisfy my expectations. When it arrived at my home(which arrived 3 days before estimated delivery)I was surprised by its size and flipped through some pages just for fun. I'm a little over half way through it now and it helped so much through confusion of the story and has led me to believe where and what Halo 4 could be about, but I could be wrong. It's very entertaining to learn more about this fictional story and so much detail has been put in it. If you get this book and read it, you'll be surprised by the Covenant's past and their alliance species "cough",Hunters,"cough" It truly is a magnificent piece of Halo. Very well put together. Defiant recommend and if you call youself a true Halo fan, you must buy this.

If your looking for more information about the Halo universe, this is the book to get!
Ever since I played Halo 2 I was hooked to its story. And I wanted to know more about their earth, how the Spartans came to be, how did the Covenant start, what types of armor etc. The list goes on. I've played all the games ( except ODST didn't care for it much) and was smitten with Halo 4. Now this book only goes up to Halo: Reach which should be expected because this book came out during that game so. The pictures are beautiful! one picture in particular took my breath away which consisted of Master Chief and Arbiter. Either way, if your in love with Halo and need to get a fix, this book needs to be on your shelf NOW!

It Is A Bible for Halo Fans

This item is amazing! When I got it in the mail, it was actually bigger and heavier than I originally expected. The artwork is amazing and the text isn't hard to read at all. If you have read any of the novels, it mainly connects the novels to the game series and clears up any questions that you may have about the saga. I did think it was very short for an encyclopedia. If you really want to know everything about Halo from this book, you can literally sit and read the whole thing from beginning to end in about 2 hours. Well worth the money and I hope they continue to update as more Halo games are released!

Yo sabia que algo andaba mal pues el rate of success de nuestros pacientes es sumamente pobre para todo el esfuerzo medico que se les provee. yo soy diabetica y por un ano he batallado pues no quiero tomar medicamentos, y ahora ya he rebajado unas 6 libras en unos 12 dias y todavia no he terminado el libro. solo hago ejercicio por 30 min al dia, llegando a mi "goal heart rate" light to moderate(caminar). en mi reciente viaje a Puerto Rico conoci personas que han tenido un gran exito con este sistema. todavia tengo un par de "concerns" pues no entiendo como incorporar las frutas y me preocupa el colesterol. por ahora estoy usando el glucometro para verificar esta teoria y si funciona. excepto que en KFC la ensalada cole slaw no es slimming como el libro estipula. voy a continuar el proceso y a terminar el libro. llame a la clinica y ellos ofrecen respuestas. le voy a pedir a mi medico que mida mi colesterol y A1c para tener una idea del impacto en mi salud.este sistema no es una varita magica, pero hasta el momento es lo mas cercano y puedo utilizar mi propio cuerpo para quemar grasa y controlar mi azucar, sin necesidad de medicamentos. la verdad mas critica que expone es que los carbohidatos refinados y la azucar son nuestro peor enemigo. --Okierican

Todo el que desee bajar de peso debe leerse este libro, yo nunca he sido obeso pero si estaba pasado en algunas libras de mi peso ideal y en dos meses logre bajar 16 libras y bajar de la talla 36 a la 32. Definitivamente los consejos del libro son magnificos, lo recomiendo 100%.

Increible pero cierto

Luego de batallar por tanto tiempo (largo tiempo) con dietas, ejercicios y luego de enfermarme del corazon, en un viaje una amiga me recomndo el libro. Ella ha perdido 120 libras..No es una dieta . Es un modo de vida y creanme..pase dos dias leyendo, lo cual no es algo que acostumbro. Ya tengo dos tallas menos en pantalon y lo que le llamamos los rollos en la cintura casi ni los veo. La gente en el trabajo a mi esposo y a mi pues ambos estamos haciendo lo que el libro nos recomienda, hemos recibido muchisimos alagos por el cambio que ven..no tan solo en la figura pero en la energia y en la actitud...Un libro que todo el mundo debe leer,..

Really works !

After trying many diets and bouncing my weight, I've started to control what I eat. Really liked the idea of being conscious of the impacts of junky food on my metabolism and health as a way for adopting better eating habits without suffering !
I've reduced 2 inches of my belt in 5 weeks feeling really good... So far so good!
