Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007) es uno de los escritores más amados del siglo XX. Make Sure to Get the Errata

The text presents an estimating procedure using production rates. While this is good background to have and is an acceptable methodology, make sure that your instructor also shows you how to use Means. The text does contain numerous errors, so make sure to get the errata sheets from the author. When we asked the author why the corrections have not been updated in the text, the author replied that the publisher said it would cost too much. Somebody needs to tell the publisher to quit selling the book until they fix it!

This book needs to be completely revised.

The original author of this book has been deceased for several revisions. The revisions were not well done and the book is outdated in many areas. Lots of photos which are not worth the space they take up and should be removed. I believe this book survives in tech schools because it has nuggets of well written and well thought out analysis of the estimating process. Without much explanation as to why, the author leans heavily toward the Heavy Civil sector of construction i.e. highways, airports, etc. The software included is also designed for heavy civil. All said, no other author on construction estimating seems to have the grasp of the foundations of estimating as this author. For me, it makes a nice supplemental reference book but I would never adopt it as a textbook.

About the Author

Chad R. Lochmiller is an Assistant Professor in Educational Leadership & Policy Studies in the School of Education at Indiana University where he teaches courses on data-driven decision-making, school finance, and research methods for practitioners. Dr. Lochmiller received his Ph.D. in Education with a specific focus on leadership, policy, and organizations from the University of Washington in 2010 and received his Master’s of Educational Administration from Gonzaga University in 2005. His research focuses on contemporary education policy issues, specifically those related to school finance and human resources. He is particularly interested in the ways in which finance and personnel issues influence leaders’ ability to enact meaningful reforms at the school and district level. He is also interested in issues related to leadership development and preparation. His research has been recently published in journals such as the Education Policy Analysis Archives, Journal of School Leadership, Journal of Research on Leadership Education, and Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership. 

Jessica Nina Lester is an Assistant Professor in the Inquiry Methodology program in the School of Education at Indiana University where she teaches courses focused on introductory research methods and qualitative research methodologies, with a particular focus on discourse and conversation analysis. Dr. Lester received her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Research, along with a graduate certificate in Qualitative Research Methods in Education, from the University of Tennessee in 2011. She received her Master’s of Education in 2005 from the University of Mary. Her research activities lie at the intersection of disability studies, discourse studies, and critical/social theory. Dr. Lester recently co-edited a book focused on performance ethnographies and co-authored a book focused on the use of digital tools across the qualitative research process. She is currently the co-editor of The Palgrave handbook of child mental health: Discourse and conversation studies and The Palgrave handbook of adult mental health: Discourse and conversation studies. She most recently published in journals such as Qualitative Inquiry, Discourse Studies, and The International Journal of Qualitative Studies.

Sophie A. de Beaune is Professor of Prehistory at Jean Moulin University Lyon 3 and researcher at CNRS in France. The author of eight books, most recently L'Homme et l'Outil: L'Invention technique durant la Préhistoire, she is also director of a book series entitled 'Le passé recomposé' at CNRS Editions.

Frederick L. Coolidge is Professor of Psychology at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. He has published extensively in behavioral genetics, neuropsychology, psychopathology assessment, and cognitive archaeology, with recent articles in the Cambridge Archaeological Journal, the Journal of Human Evolution, and the Journal of Archaeological Research, among others.

Thomas Wynn is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. He has published extensively on the evolution of human cognition, culminating in a target article in Behavioral and Brain Sciences (2002).

The book is a nice collections of articles written by the archaeologists, paleoanthropologists, neuroscientists, and psychologists doing the work in these fields.

This is not the sort of book that would normally find its way onto my bed side table, but I was sure glad to have had the opportunity of reading it, and would highly recommend it as a must read for the young/ adolescent generation of today and for anyone else wishing to enjoy three score years + ten with a full set of teeth. Many questions answered and a great leap forward for the usually daunting dental experience; thank you Dr Bonsall.

If you ever read a book about your health,teeth especially,make it this one,I've learnt more from Dr Bonsall than any dentist I've seen ever,he's open honest and holistic in his care and treatment,he changed my life from a hidden scared to say anything man into a confident happy talkative man,you need to to care for your teeth so take time to read and take it in,this book will make your life and teeth a joy to live with!

Though-provoking and dense, but worth interaction!

David J. Downs is Associate Professor of New Testament Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary. Downs has an MDiv from Fuller Theological Seminary and a PhD from Princeton Theological Seminary. Downs is the author of The Offering of the Gentiles: Paul’s Collection for Jerusalem in Its Chronological, Cultural, and Cultic Context and co-editor of The Unrelenting God: Essays on God’s Action in Scripture in Honor of Beverly Roberts Gaventa. Most recently, Downs has delivered a blockbuster examination into the charitable giving of the early Christian movement.

Alms: Charity, Reward, and Atonement in Early Christianity looks to overturn the Western idea of charitable giving—or more precisely “almsgiving”—as a means to bring about social reform or personal identity, instead positing the notion that early Christians were compelled to give as an efficacious means of atoning for sin. Almsgiving according to Downs, “refers rather broadly to the merciful provision of material assistance to those in need, including monetary distributions, food, clothing, and shelter” (p. 6). Thus, “atoning almsgiving” is the means by which almsgiving is understood to bring with it redemptive and meritorious qualities—a framework of “charity as a means of cancelling, cleansing, covering, extinguishing, lightening, or in some way atoning for human sin and/or its consequences” (p.7).

Downs’ exploration to establish the above reality is ambitious and at times may be too complex for some readers. In fact, if the subject matter is as important and pervasive as Downs contends, then I would assume an abbreviated version would be helpful for the average reader. That said, the average reader will still be able to glean from Downs’ overall argument. The foundation of the book begins in the OT (specifically the LXX) where Downs’ observes a profound relation between charity and reward in Deuteronomy and Proverbs among others. Next, similar observations are concluded within the Apocrypha (specifically Tobit and Sirach), the NT literature, the Patristic literature, and well into the second and third centuries. The notion of “atoning almsgiving” is then traced from the foundation (OT and Apocrypha) through the NT and into the early Christian Church (Basil of Caesarea, Clement of Alexandra, John Chrysostom, Origen, Tertullian, etc.), as observation upon observation are examined and presented to the reader.

While Downs’ is neither the first nor the last to make such observations concerning the practice of giving in the early Christianity (see Redemptive Almsgiving in Early Christianity by Roman Garrison), I am confident that Alms: Charity, Reward, and Atonement in Early Christianity is among the best, and it will be studied for many years to come. Still, as I mentioned above, there is an opportunity for such notions to be brought into a more condensed package for laity. Moreover, while Downs was thorough in his approach (sometime overly so), I still found myself at times very much unconvinced by his conclusions. This could be a lack of exposure to the concept that is being presented, or it could be that Downs’ argument for “atoning almsgiving” in the early Christian movement is not as established as he thinks. It is likely the former.

Alms: Charity, Reward, and Atonement in Early Christianity by David J. Downs is an important book that demands consideration. This meticulous study will become an essential read for any one interested in the study of early Christianity. It comes highly recommended!
