Insightful, practical, people-focused

What I like about this book is that it's not another "think-piece" offering one big policy or instructional shift to "fix" education, and it's not a techie project management guide based on an approach that worked well in the software industry (or something). Instead this book starts from the premise that people are the key to change in education. Data, planning techniques and theoretical frameworks are all useful tools which education leaders can use - but the tools serve the people, not the other way around. The book is stuffed full of examples of where actual education leaders have used the "deliverology" approach to improve outcomes for students. As someone who's had the privilege of working with the authors of this book, I'm really excited to see this published and I hope it get's the attention it deserves.

Great stand-alone math book

I received this book the first time in a packaged Kindergarten curriculum set, and we loved it. My oldest child was always excited to do math, and loved the variety the book provided, as well as, eye catching colors and activities on each page. So when my second child was ready for Kindergarten, I didn't look elsewhere for a Math resource, I knew that this would continue to work well for us. We will stick with this series!
Rather than approaching new subjects one at a time in separate chapters, the child can work on one skill for a page or two, then move on to something new, and a few pages later they go back and review a past skill. It keeps it exciting and fresh for the kids. And, we finish these books well within the parameters of a regular school year...not because there aren't enough pages, but because my kids want to sit down and do 10 or more pages at a time.
I would highly recommend!

Well Worth the Expense

I was looking for a book to combine critical thinking, logic, and mathematics and I found it in this book! My child enjoys the work and I feel good knowing that we are providing him with sound, superior materials!

Hit the spot!

I absolutely can't say enough good things about this book. My daughter is a reluctant learner and even though she's intelligent, she has a hard time working on content she thinks she might not be able to do. I wasn't sure how a spiral approach would work but it was absolutely perfect for her. She would do a hard page, feel slightly frustrated, and the next page would be something she understood better and found less overwhelming. We have been able to cover a lot more material this way with a much happier kid.

I also love the way it gradually introduces hard concepts through illustrations (like skip counting, fractions, symmetry, etc.). She's able to receive an introduction to a topic, review another topic she's comfortable with and practice a topic she's less comfortable with all in one day with no preparation on my part (literally, you open the book and that's it).

If there's a topic that really is too easy for her (e.g. shapes) then we just skip a page. It definitely has enough practice and I prefer workbooks that ere on the side of too much repetition than not enough.

We've used this as our complete curriculum this year and will continue with the series we love it so much. Worth every penny!

One of the best horror anthologies around

I purchased this collection of works originally in its 1988 "Night Visions" release, primarily for its Stephen King contributions - and promptly work the cover off reading and re-reading the absolute masterworks by Dan Simmons and George R.R. Martin. I was literally jumping out of my chair when I happened across this new edition!

First off King's works are as good as always, both entertaining (Reploids, Sneakers), disturbing (Dedication) and thought-provoking.

Dan Simmons' contributions were an unexpected surprise. "Metastasis" had me on the edge of my seat, and "Vanni Fucci is Alive and Well and Living in Hell" had me laughing out loud and shouting triumpantly at the same time. Bravo, Mr. Simmons!

George R.R. Martin's "The Skin Trade" definitely saves the best for last. This short story has become my favorite horror tale of all time, hands down. As of my writing this, I have read it at least twenty times, and it hasn't lost a bit of its appeal. For those of you who only know Mr. Martin through his "Song of Ice and Fire" series, this will show you why he is one of the greatest storytellers of our generation. It is a must-have for any reader's shelf.

A strong anthology, with a 3.57 average, with the Simmons being the weakest part in general. However, the Martin 'hard boiled werewolf' novella is excellent.

Sad to say...SK seems to be dime store level here.

I have been reading SK for almost 30 years now. Along the way I have occasionally had to allow for some "make a deadline" stories(ie Geralds Game, The Tommynockers.) Over all I have loved most of his work and have always eagerly awaited his next story. The last one I read was the final Dark Tower book of the series and I have to say, his ego seems to be out of control in this one. It used to be quirky and fun to have him incorporate himself into his stories and movies.

Stephen King's story, in this book, definitely falls short of his normal intense and creative writting. As was stated in another review, there seems to be no ending. As for buying it, that's up to you. I am a loyal reader of his and will give him a few more sales (we'll see what "Cell" has to offer, but it sounds dangerously close to the semi-recent movie) just in case he is going through a slow period. Dare I say it...maybe it's time to call it a day and retire from writing Stephen...or at least take an extended vacation.

About the Author
Gordon L Rottman entered the US Army in 1967, volunteered for Special Forces and completed training as a weapons specialist. He served in the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam in 1969-70 and subsequently in airborne infantry, long-range patrol and intelligence assignments until retiring after 26 years. He was a special operations forces scenario writer at the Joint Readiness Training Center for 12 years and is now a freelance writer, living in Texas.

Silent Death - Lying in Wait!

This review is for two volumes of the Osprey Publishing Elite series. The books are "World War II Allied Sabotage Devices and Booby Traps" and "World War II Axis Booby Traps and Sabotage Tactics" by Gordon Rottman.

These books cover a subject often neglected or overlooked in military history; and if covered is played down in its effectiveness, due to the "ungentlemanly" conduct of these tactics. There have been very few pictorial accounts on the subject and these Osprey titles add to the material currently available. Both of the books are not an definitive study, however they do vividly cover the salient points of these "guerrilla" tactics.

The books cover Allied and Axis booby trap devices designed to harm or surprise a person, unknowingly triggered by the presence or actions of the victim. As the word "trap" implies, they often have some form of bait designed to lure the victim towards it. Overall, a lot of the referenced material can be found in obsolete military manuals and on-line, however these books have packaged the information in a nicely packaged and easy to understand format. In my opinion I found the books to be a very good introduction to the subject.

The books cover Allied and Axis booby trap devices designed to injure or slow down the enemy. There still being used in the world IED ( improvised explosive devices). The German Heer (Army) may not have bine as sophisticated, how ever they were effective.

Regrettably a lot of the referenced material can be found in old and new military manuals and on-line Showing mans propensity to do harm to his fellow man. The books has packaged the use of booby trap information during WWII in a nicely and in ad easy to understand format. I consider this book to be a good intro to the subject of WWII. Axis Booby traps and Sabotage tactics.

Buy Osprey Books by Gordon Rottman

Recommended, as are all of Gordon's books written for Osprey. Within the limits of the the Osprey Range Gordon's books are well written, interesting, factual, backed by thorough research and incorporates information often left out of other books on WWII by Osprey. Usually includes technical details, tactics, organizations and examples of use.

This book explores the use of Axis Booby traps - hidden traps left in the area just abandoned by Axis units (mostly German, the Japanese didn't use them much in comparison) to slow down and disrupt pursuing Allied units. A dirty business still being used in the world - improvised explosive devices. In the case of the German Heer (Army) not so improvised.

There is a companion volume on Allied booby traps as well.

Good book.
