Chasing Darkness: An Elvis Cole Novel, by Robert Crais

A New York Times Bestseller -- Chasing Darkness is a blistering thriller from the bestselling author who sets the standard for intense, powerful crime writing. It's fire season, and the hills of Los Angeles are burning. When police and fire department personnel rush door to door in a frenzied evacuation effort, they discover the week-old corpse of an apparent suicide. But the gunshot victim is less gruesome than what they find in his lap: a photo album of seven brutally murdered young women -- one per year, for seven years. And when the suicide victim is identified as a former suspect in one of the murders, the news turns Elvis Cole's world upside down. Shut out of the investigation by a special LAPD task force determined to close the case, Elvis Cole and Joe Pike desperately fight to uncover the truth about Lionel Byrd and his nightmare album of death -- a truth hidden by lies, politics, and corruption in a world where nothing is what it seems to be.

From Publishers Weekly
After earning a law degree, James Daniels quit recording audiobooks, but returned to read Crais's newest Elivis Cole and Joe Pike mystery (his previous Crais recordings include The Forgotten Man, Hostage, The Last Detective, Lullaby Town and The Watchman). It's a welcome return and Daniel's no-nonsense reading elevates one of Crais's lesser efforts and turns it into an enjoyable listening experience. Slipping back into these characters, Daniels easily distinguishes Cole's wise-guy banter from Pike's steely resolution, and he gives this outing's enigmatic villain, Lionel Byrd, just the right note of weirdness. A fire unearths evidence that someone Cole helped prove innocent of murdering a prostitute six years ago may actually have been guilty—and may have killed many other women. Cole and Pike dodge bullets as they dig around to find out the truth. A Simon & Schuster hardcover (Reviews, May 19). (July)

From Bookmarks Magazine
Elvis Cole has been around for more than 20 years, and he has aged like fine wine. Chasing Darkness contains the classic crime elements that have made Crais’s series so popular, but the novel seems, as a few critics commented, more like a straightforward crime thriller this time around. Material Witness felt that the novel was perhaps less psychologically intense than previous installments, but nonetheless still as compelling in its exploration of crime and backroom politics. A tight, plausible plot and a wholly unexpected ending kept critics turning the pages. In sum, “[t]he Cole books are first-rate entertainment. If you don’t know them, this one is a good starting point” (Washington Post).

From Booklist
When Lionel Byrd is charged with murder, his attorney hires Elvis Cole. The PI corroborates Byrd’s alibi through a convenience store security tape, but murders similar to the one in which Byrd was a suspect continue. Then Byrd is found in his small rental in the Los Angeles hills, the victim of an apparent suicide. Beside his body is a notebook with pictures of all the victims, taken at the moment of death. The consensus among the cops, the press, and the victims’ families is that Cole freed a killer. Cole stands by his work and digs in again, but this time, his goal isn’t to clear Byrd, it’s to find the killer. The Cole novels are always thoughtful and entertaining, but sometimes a little short on mystery—usually readers know who but not necessarily why. Here the killer isn’t revealed until late in the game, and it’s a genuine “a-ha!” moment. Mix in the usual sterling dialogue, the shadowy presence of Cole’s sidekick Joe Pike, and an extended appearance by former bomb squad technician and semi-pro smart aleck Carol Starkey (Demolition Angel, 2000) for an intense and very satisfying thriller. Crais is one of the very best, and this novel encompasses all of his strengths. --Wes Lukowsky

Dark?
By Luther Mills
This was the first Robert Crais, Elvis Cole novels that I've read. When I was younger I loved to these type of books especially those of Raymond Chandler and Donald Hamilton. Philip Marlowe and Lew Archer were "hard boiled" Los Angeles" "private eyes." Elvis Cole is a softer version of these detectives. More like, Spenser, with a cast of similar characters, who back him up through out the novel.

While the police are evacuating a neighborhood, because of the threat of a spreading forest fire. Two officers find a dead man with what looks like a suicide by a self inflicted gunshot wound. At the man's feet is a photo album of pictures taken at the scene of several brutal unsolved murders. One of the murder's the suicide victim was charged with the killing. Our hero, Elvis Cole, proved that the man was innocent, he was somewhere else at the time of the murder. Based on Cole's evidence and witness, the Judge dismissed the case. Cole is questioned about the victims death, the police still believe the man was guilty of the murder. Cole sets out to prove that his evidence wasn't false and the man was innocent. Along the way the story involves, a missing witness, police cover ups, shady and ambitious politicians. police officers, an attorney, vengeful families, which make for interesting reading and a surprise ending. The novel is fast paced and hard to put down.

Darkness Uncovered
By Crayon
I am a big fan of Robert Crais. He has a long list of best sellers that feature detective Elvis Cole and his friend and helper Joe Pike. Michael Connelly is perhaps the best writer of police procedurals and detective fiction. Crais is a close second. Crais book "Hostage" was particularly good and made into a movie. Also recommend his books that feature
Joe Pike such as "Sentry."
Chasing Darkness is a good read but not his best work. In this book Cole, an ex LA cop, now private detective
investigates an apparent suicide of a man Cole had previously cleared of a murder charge. The man is found with
pictures of a number of dead women and Cole is tagged by police with keeping a serial killer on the streets. Cole is confident that his previous investigation was correct and that something is fishy with the suicide. Cole eventually finds the surprising real killer thru solid gumshoe work and there was definitely darkness discovered. I gave the book a three star because I was not invested in the characters as much as in his other books. That said it was a good read. I am constantly trying to find good detective novels and keep coming back to Connelly and Crais.

New Writer to Me
By Julia Luther
I'm giving this all five stars even though, reading other reviews, I realize I might not do so if I'd read other books in this series. I got it at a reduced price as one of Kindle's daily specials, which is a good place to try out unfamiliar authors if the reader reviews and the book's excerpts don't warn me off. As it is, I've added Crais to my short list of authors to hunt for more of (Kate Atkinson is another who comes to mind).

Certainly there's background information one can only guess at (e.g., who's Pike? I'd decided he must be a very large, stereotypically black ex-cop - but I see from Wikipedia that he's ex-Marine Corps). Doesn't matter all that much. The writing flows well, and Crais is very good at establishing the various LA-area settings. I guess maybe I prefer too little character info to too much, which you get when an amateurish writer makes his characters gaze in the mirror and describe themselves.
