Screenwriting - THIS is it.

Wow! This is the place to start. Definitely the best tool I've found for identifing the difference between stories that work and those that don't. By 'work', I mean scripts/shorts/docs/novels that are satisfying, marketable and moving - the ones that get made.
You can apply this technique to any story and instantly see what's necessary to make it great - hold it up against any movie and the reasons that movie got made (and others didn't) literally jump out at you.
Every time I'm asked for screenwriting advice - it starts with this technique, 100%.

In a word - superb!

I loved this book! I am taking Jill's class and understanding what makes a great film by deconstructing films and scripts via Jill's nutshell process. I just presented the nutshell for my first screenplay in class and was approved to move forward and beat out the scenes. Making new friends going out after class with Jill and other writers. Jill is extremely gifted at reading or hearing your nutshell for a new screenplay and identifying problems, holes and how to make it a much more satisfying story. She tells it like it is in a straightforward, no-nonsense manner. Her honest feedback isn't for sissies, nor designed to make you feel good. But I promise if you follow her steps, you will be a better screenwriter!

In a nutshell, buy it!

You may have read a lot of screenwriting books, but trust me—most of the ideas and tips in this one are unique. If you work through the book and think carefully about your story, you'll have a blueprint for all the major plot points and (most importantly) for your protagonist's transformational journey. The breakdowns of classic movies like Groundhog Day, Tootsie, and The Usual Suspects are a huge bonus. Highly recommended.

Jim Henson's Sesame Street Muppets cavort cheerfully with people of all sizes, shapes and ethnicities in this rather humdrum effort to show the ways in which all people are the same, despite obvious physical differences. On alternate spreads, drawings imitating photos zero in on variations on noses, hair, mouths, skin, eyes and bodies, all "different" from one another. A turn of the page reveals all of the owners of these body parts interacting, alongside several lines of sing-song verse explaining how our noses, hair, etc., are "the same." Some of the rhymes are silly or forced; part of the explanation of skin reads: "Muscles and bones are wrapped inside it. / We all have blood and skin to hide it!" Even the affable Sesame Street gang can't enliven this mundane treatment of a significant subject. Ages 4-8.

Especially good for adopted children

We really like this book for our 3-yr old chinese-born daughter. It not only teaches her racial harmony, but also shows her that her parents are more like her than different. We like to give this book as a gift to other children and it is appropriate for any child. The illustrations are cute and we have had many a giggle as we point each other out in the pictures ("Daddy's hair looks like Big Bird's!").

Sesame Street helps us learn about diversity.

I have a dog-eared copy of this book that I have used for years in my preschool classroom. The format of the book is repetive - "We are all alike. We all have hair to keep us warm." Then on the next page, "We are all different, our hair looks different". The children are immediately attracted to the Sesame Street characters and the possibility of guessing each character by their distinguishing feature. Often the favorite page is the one about noses, each character's nose is shown as if in a page of photographs showing just the noses - ... to The Count to Snuffalupagus.

He received a BA in mathematics from the University of California, Irvine, and an MA in mathematics from California State University, Long Beach. Mr. Aufmann taught math, computer science, and physics at Palomar College in California, where he was on the faculty for 28 years. His textbooks are highly recognized and respected among college mathematics professors. Today, Mr. Aufmann's professional interests include quantitative literacy, the developmental math curriculum, and the impact of technology on curriculum development.

Richard Nation received a B.A. in mathematics from Morningside College and a M.S. degree in mathematics from the University of South Dakota. Mr. Nation also attended a National Science Foundation academic year institute in mathematics at San Diego State University. Mr. Nation taught math at Palomar College in California, where he was on the faculty for 20 years. He has over 38 years' experience teaching mathematics at the high school and college levels. He is the co-author of several Aufmann titles. Today, Mr. Nation's professional interests include the impact of technology on curriculum development and on the teaching of mathematics at the precalculus level.

The world of IT and computers is a fast evolving one and Professor Lloyd has, in writng this book, been able to shed light on problems both past and present in his coverage of this subject and citation of the numerous stautes and caselaw relating to it.

About the Author
Marlyn Shelton is Professor Emeritus of Atmospheric Science at the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources, University of California, Davis, USA. He is a member of the American Water Resources Association, the Association of American Geographers, and the Association of Pacific Coast Geographers. He has been elected as a Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellow and a Fellow of the Ohio Academy of Science. He has authored and co-authored four previous books, published numerous scientific papers, and served as an associate editor for the Journal of the American Water Resources Association from 1991-9. He has given interviews to newspapers and television stations on topics such as climate change, El Niño, floods, drought, and air quality, and has presented lectures and workshops for the US Forest Service and the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

Climatic Water Budgets

This is Shelton, Professor emeritis, UC-Davis, at his forte. This is what he taught and a work of passion. The world must come to see water and climate from this perspective - a whole or big picture way of looking at things. Not mathematically intimidating and a good treatment. I wish water managers at the local, state and country level thought this way (compared to "go get more"). This is a big treatment. Even understanding the subject it will take a while to get through it all - and will work as a handy reference to refer to from time to time.
