If romance like this is known as trouble, be ready to become immersed in it

Twenty-three-year-old Maryanne "Annie" Simpson has led a life of privilege since the day she was born. Being the daughter of a prominent business-owner who's practically in charge of the publishing world can do that for you. So, upon college graduation, Maryanne decides to do something great: land a job in journalism. Now, for the average person, this could be a tremendous feat, but for Annie, well...in the flash of an eye she has uprooted herself from her cushy New York penthouse apartment, and traveled to the drizzly city of Seattle, where she's keeping herself warm in a lavish building known as The Seattle. It is here that her father has arranged a wonderful job as a columnist for one of his papers: the "Seattle Review." Maryanne is happy with her job, and attempts to show her co-workers just how hard she is willing to work to keep it. But when Nolan Adams, a columnist for the "Seattle Sun" - a rival newspaper - begins writing his columns about Maryanne, referring to her as "the deb" - short for debutante - leaving his legion of fans salivating over the new information he feels he is obligated to share with the city, Maryanne gets upset. I am fascinated with the newspaper business, so stumbling upon HERE COMES TROUBLE was like a dream come true for me. Debbie Macomber, as usual, has created two enchanting young characters, whose lives revolve around writing and trying to avoid the inevitable: falling for one another. While Maryanne has always lived the life of luxury, she is not a spoiled, cold-hearted character who holds herself above others. Quite the opposite, in fact. Maryanne is a fantastic character, whose spirits are bright in every situation. A young woman who tries to make the best of everything, whether trying her hand at freelancing, or winning the affections of the grouchy Mr. Adams. Nolan, on the other hand, is a grumbling, mumbling, rumpled old detective type, who fits my ideas of an investigative reporter/novelist to a T. His long hours spent clacking away at his typewriter are something that any writer can relate to; while his kindness to the neighborhood teenagers is admirable, and almost a shocking revelation. Together, Maryanne and Nolan create quite a duo. The chemistry between these two characters is absolutely undeniable, and their personalities play off of one another perfectly - always at each others throats, yet in love with one another at the same time. If romance like this is known as trouble, be ready to become immersed in it.

feisty characters

Here Comes Trouble is Debbie Macomber's 52nd novel. Streetwise Seattle newspaper columnist Kramer Adams writes an unflattering article "My evening with the debutante...." about Maryanne Simpson of the New York Simpsons, currently working at a rival Seattle paper owned by her father. While she is angry about his interfering opinions, she decides he is right about one thing: her life has been too easy. She wants to earn Kramer's respect, so she quits her cushy job, her luxury apartment and her trust fund, determined to earn her own living. Kramer tries to talk her out of it, feeling she's a babe in the woods, and he's responsible for her safety. Sparks fly between them, but something else happens between them as well: he can't resist kissing her. But no way is he the right man for her: he's not an appropriate match for the daughter of magnate Samuel Simpson. Maryanne has other ideas. An enjoyable romantic tale with two feisty characters, lots of snappy dialogue and the power to bring a tear to the eye.

Heartwarming Tale

Author Debbie Macomber creates another heartwarming tale of opposites attracting for a tantalizing outcome with a holiday touch.

HERE COME TROUBLE is the Christmas Eve tale Maryanne and Nolan Adams tell their children about how they meet and fell in love. The story looks back at their beginning and concludes with two surprise gifts for the youngsters.

The charming voice of narrator Sarah Grace brings the characters to life. She vocalizes the emotions of the characters as the attraction sizzles and the bantering begins.

Maryanne and Nolan worked for rival newspaper. After Nolan wrote a column about Maryanne's pampered life, Maryanne quits the job her father had gotten for her and strikes out on her own. Feeling guilty for his actions, Nolan takes it upon himself to look over Maryanne and her new endeavors. The laughter begins as the pair try to fight the attraction they feel for each other.

Macomber creates intriguing characters you'd like to know better. She gives them trials and triumphs readers/listeners can relate to.

HERE COMES TROUBLE is a story where you know the ending (maybe not all), but it's how they arrive there that's the fun.

More Fantasy, less relationships, please?

Demon Underground is S.L. Wright's sequel to Confessions of a Demon. Wright begins pretty much right at the end of Confessions with the life and times of Allay, a human girl turned demon. Demon Underground is a straightforward urban fantasy novel with a nice blend of action, social interaction and lots and lots of romantic angst.

In Demon Underground, Allay is dealing with the aftereffects of having taken down one of the most powerful demons in New York City. The relationship she had begun with Ram, another very powerful demon, continues as a central theme of the book. Allay is constantly caught up in the tug-of-war between her mistrust of a demon more powerful than herself and an overwhelming sexual and emotional connection with Ram. It's not my favorite part of the book, but it fits with the genre.

Wright parades a number of different demon characters through the story. Many are merely normal demons trying to survive and find a place where they are safe. Some are powerful and manipulative, and don't live by a moral code that Allay can accept. This conflict of morality -- her human values versus the realities of being a demon -- makes for a large part of the difficulties that Allay has to face. She doesn't want to be a bad person, even if her definition of bad doesn't really apply to most demons.

The final theme is the conflict of hiding demons from humankind to avoid persecution. When one of the major demon players in the city makes plans to profit from a possible exposure of demonkind, Allay gets caught up in the middle of trying to stop it or at least protect herself and others from the aftereffects. Her solutions are unique and stressful for her, but that's part of what one expects in urban fantasy.

On the whole Demon Underground is passable. Wright's concept of demons and their symbiotic relationship with humans, introduced in Confessions of a Demon, is still my favorite aspect of the story. It's interesting and plausible enough to be a welcome change from the oversexed vampire/werewolf theme that we are often subjected to. Demon Underground falls short of its predecessor in that it focuses more on politics and relationships rather than continuing to develop innovative fantasy ideas. This series is decent, but not something that you want to place at the top of your to-be-read pile.

super urban fantasy

Allay tends the Den on C bar in Manhattan's Lower East Side in order to dine off the anguished emotions of human patrons who drink there though she finds doing that an abomination even though she has somewhat adapted. She is a one of a kind type of demon; as she is a human who ingested the life force of a demon. Her scent signature differs from demons who would all love to feed off her. Allay's offspring Bliss seems more adjusted than she while her BFF Shock warns her not to trust Theo Ram who has killed his offspring for many millennia. Allay is attracted to Ram.

Being a unique hybrid places her in an odd position of no one trusting her and thus she is the perfect individual to foster an agreement to end the squabble between powerful fighting demons. However, as she works on the place, Allay has some doubts about what is going on. She fears she is being used as an expendable discard and though feeling paranoid as she believes assassins are flooding the streets with her as a target; she goes underground knowing the hostilities is about to explode into open urban warfare.

The second demon urban fantasy (see Confession of a Demon) continues the Manhattan saga of Allay trying to survive in a world where she feels she does not belong. The action-packed story line will hook readers from the onset as the heroine is trapped in a deadly demonic tug of war. Although it pays dividends to read the first exhilarating thriller to better understand key players especially the heroine, a mix of California mellow and New York shtick, Demon Underground is a super tale.

Series really picking up speed.

DEMON UNDERGROUND was a solid second installment in the Allay series, deepening the development of Allay herself as well as bringing major changes to her world. Wright takes the entire series in a direction I hadn't expected at all, making me very excited to follow up with the next book in the series (and very nervous that I couldn't find hints of the next book on-line).

The Allay series world mythology centers around demons preferring to feed on a particular emotion, and therefore acting in a way, consciously or unconsciously, to elicit this emotion in others. Wright is phenomenally consistent in how she applies this framework, and it is fascinating to watch the interplay of demons, using their names as an extra clue to decode their motives. The demons themselves do this, a sort of cultural reality show where everyone compares notes and makes predictions about other demons' actions and motivations. I felt like I was right on the couch next to Allay and Bliss, passing the popcorn and shouting out guesses. In this way, DEMON UNDERGROUND comes into its own, a more thorough and satisfying dip into the demon world than CONFESSIONS OF A DEMON was able to offer.

Then again, Wright had a lot of ground to cover in her first book. Very little time passes between the end of CONFESSIONS OF A DEMON and the start of DEMON UNDERGROUND, and I enjoyed picking up where I left off. It would not be impossible to read DEMON UNDERGROUND as a stand alone, but I do think you'd miss out on the character nuances and back story from book one (and who would want to do that?). Allay's relationship with Ram develops significantly in this installment, with the extra complications of Bliss and Mystify thrown in to the mix. It was interesting to see Ram's old school attitudes clash with Allay's newly developing sense of "demon right and wrong." Wright strikes a good balance of conflict and compromise, keeping things interesting without being unnecessarily dramatic.

In DEMON UNDERGROUND, Allay truly begins to come into her own as a mover and shaker in the demon world. While it is not clear if her decisions are good ones, they are at least novel (for a demon). My favorite part of the book was when Allay realized that, despite her human origins, she is as much defined by her demon nature and name as any of her peers. I look forward to seeing how this epiphany will affect her decisions in the future.

Just Okay

I don't know how I stumbled upon books about children in foster care/adoption- I think through Book Bub. I love books by Cathy Glass and have read them all, and Casey Watson, a few by Tricia Merry, and others in this genre. Many were very good and extremely interesting. I thought this book was okay- but certainly not that great.
The story itself could have been told in 50 pages or less- most of the book simply detailed non-important interactions between Rosie and Megan. I understand that Rosie probably did this so that readers would get just how much she truly loved the little girl, but still. There wasn't much of a "story" beyond what you could read in the book details, other than adding in some additional characters. The story was extremely predictable. I know it's about what happened in her real life, but it could have been told as one of her short stories.
That being said, I did still like the book because I like reading books in this genre, and reading about babies & children. It was still a heartwarming story, even though not one of the more interesting ones I've read. Those who read the authors mentioned above would probably like this book as a book to read while waiting for a new book by one of the other authors to come out. That's how I ended up reading it, even though it's a fairly new release itself.

Fun read that keeps you wondering if she ever ...

Yawatta has excellent writing skills. This book did feel a tad rushed though, but not sure how it could have embellished a little bit more. She covered the story well but it just left me with wanting a little more. The ending was a tad unexpected and left me with a "WTF, I didn't see that coming" moment, but in a good way.

Finia is a nice character, and you just keep wishing for her to grow some backbone and see through Miki. She is just too nice of a person. Miki, wow, I admit I can't stand him, which is exactly what the author wants! This book reminded me a bit of war of the roses though.

Definitely a fun read and enjoyable.

Just read this and can say the name says it all. I ended up getting this one from the unlimited kindle books after seeing the author asking for reviewers on Goodreads. Miki has a very TWISTED OBSESSION with Fiania and no one best get in his way...

Dark and Surprising!

Obsession has become a very popular writing trope but, here's the thing - not everyone can write obsession well. Ms. Hosby is excellent at crafting dark, violent tales and I truly enjoyed this engaging short read. A quick glimpse: Miki desperately wants Finia's love back in his life but he's not just garden variety desperate - he's crazy desperate. The writing flowed, allowing me to easily slip into each character's viewpoint - particularly Finia. While far from weak, she did allow Miki's madness to drive them all to the edge of cliff (speaking only figuratively!) and that made me want to smack her cheek and tell her, "Buckle up baby, and hit the gas pedal until he's gone form your rear view mirror". Overall, Ms. Hosby has created a wonderful piece of fiction and I highly recommend it as a good, quick read!

on of the best books on judicial review

This is an excellent book for scholars interested in judicial review. Bobbitt breaks down the typology of constitutional interpretation into six categories.

It is not written in a manner that is accessible for the casual reader, but if you are interested in how constitutional interpretation is approached from different philosophies - what separates a Justice Frankfurter from a Justice Black, or a Scalia from Stevens -- then I would highly reccomend this book.

An Interesting Approach

This book provides a well written explanation to the logic of various constitutional arguments. The inclusion of arguments favored by Justices as well as specific situations in which they were relevant helps establish the relevant context clearly and effectively.

While the strict empiricist may finish reading disappointed, those looking for insight into the approach of judges would be well served to give this a look.

London voyeurism at its best!

I just returned from a 10 day trip to London to attend my son's graduation exercises. I went on my own so I decided to take along a guide to what I wanted to know about, namely where did all those fabulous literary folk live, work, love, and scandalize? This guide was more than adequate to the task. Although I did mostly a Bloomsbury walk (there are two), and a Hampstead walk, I was well satisfied with the result. The guide is easy to carry, fairly lightweight, and well organized. It is very easy to spot medallion-adorned spots, but some just are not identified as they are just that esoteric. Such as the Senate House at University of London: the giant white edifice was the work-place of George Orwell and Dorothy L. Sayers, and the inspiration for Orwell's Ministry of Fear. No other guide book has given me such keen insight and well-paced walks (pubs included). The maps are beyond helpful and I never once got lost even when I was traversing Coram Fields from the home of H.D. to the Dickens Museum (closed until Christmas!). In Hampstead I dragged my son and daughter-in-law (since that is where they live) to the Keats House, the Hampstead Museum, and they dragged me (willingly) to their favorite pub The Holly. This book is a little hard to obtain, but well worth it and I know it is in my permanent collection and will become well-traveled.

good resource for London visitors-- but more would have been better

The idea of this book is terrific and I found it very useful but think it could have been better, really. 25 walks isn;t quite enough tho the Bloomsbury material is great and worth the price of admission right there.

Good book to have for getting a good overview of AIR but not that comprehensive

The title of this book seems very interesting but a little intimidating. "Breaking out of the Web Browser" provides a good understanding of the history of information systems and claims that AIR can supersede a web browser by overcoming its limitations by providing more and better features. This book is meant to be used by Web Developers who have a programming background preferably in Flex or Actionscript. The majority of content in this book is based on exploring a time tracker application which has its own pros and cons. In my opinion, it is a great book to start learning AIR although not that comprehensive in detail.

After starting to read this book, it seems to me that this book is more geared towards somebody who is a beginner in developing AIR Desktop applications. It sounds a little contradicting with the "Intermediate" book level printed on the back of this book. I do see that one requires an intermediate level of programming language to understand its contents.

The books starts with a good preface about the internet era going from the mainframe to the client-server model to the RIA development model. It also gives a good introduction about what AIR can do and provides are good entry into the subject. I am really not sure why the authors chose to base the book on a time tracker application. It is similar to a story telling approach but in this case I have already lost my interest to an extent due to the thought of developing an application which I have no desire to build. I think that having more examples would have made this book a much more interesting read.

The first chapter of this book allows a web developer familiar with HTML with JavaScript, Flash, or Flex to create AIR applications. Again, I do not know why the authors chose to develop the rest of the chapters of this book based on a time tracker applications for understanding the functionality of AIR. I can agree with the authors to a certain extent about why one needs a pretext to dive into the book but to me it doesn't seem to be helpful in the long run.

Chapter Two of the book explains how AIR can interact with the OS clipboard. I do not see the importance of including such a chapter towards the beginning of the book while I am trying to learn the basic functionalities AIR can provide. I am a beginner in AIR but I do have a moderate amount of flex experience. I can see why the time tracker application does require a clipboard interaction but it isn't that appealing in nature.

The flow of information from Chapter Four onwards is smooth and well maintained. Authors do an excellent job in explaining the drag and drop functionality in AIR, the benefits of using a SQLite database with direct access to the file system which according to me is a definite win over the web browsers due to their inability in interacting with the OS directly.

Chapter Seven is geared towards the general look and feel of the AIR application. I just love the idea of enabling applications to handle networking and user activity events in addition to having an auto-update feature using the AIR framework.

Chapter Nine explores the use HTML content in an AIR application. I am not sure why the authors chose not to mention that fact that all HTML tags are not supported by AIR application. It seems like they are advocating the use of AIR without providing its limitations. They starts off the chapter by mentioning that AIR uses the same HTML rendering engine as the Apple's Safari browser.

In the next chapters, authors do a good job of explaining several ways to interact with a web server for exchanging remote data using SOAP, REST, AMF, RTMP, and Sockets. Chapter Eleven continues to explain the benefits of using Adobe Blaze DS which provides an efficient and sophisticated mechanism to interact with server data. However, the introduction to Blaze DS is not up to the mark. It would have been helpful to include more visual representations of what Blaze DS can or cannot do.

Chapter Twelve includes details about using Fluint testing framework while Chapter Thirteen gives a good tutorial about deploying AIR applications. The book concludes by providing a understanding of the AIR security and conveying some best/worst practices approach for developing AIR applications.

This book could serve as a good introduction to a person having a good background in flex. Although the book is based on a time tracker application, an experienced flex programmer can start by choosing the chapter or topic of their choice. I think the book is great for getting a general idea of the features AIR provides but you are definitely looking at spending time on other books or tutorials available on the web to get the things going as you want.

Great book, definitely pick it up.

Breaking out of the browser with air is an excellent book. It provides a great overview of a ton of things one can do with Air. The book is not a comprehensive bible of every single thing you need to know, but that's one of its strong points. If I need to know the complete in's and out's of something I'll check the api docs and get my info there. The best thing this book does is give you a full understanding of whats available.

Another key point for me is that the book is good at showing what kinds of things a developer should keep in mind when it comes to making desktop apps rather than web apps. This is bigger than you would think for impacting user experience.

I went into this book with as3 knowledge, having worked on an air app prior and some flex knowledge. Coming out I know alot more things to watch out for and a heads up some some functionality I haven't used. There's also a ton of good snippets of code; just enough, to give you an idea of whats being discussed.

As far as frameworks go they take a look at using some commands and talk a little about how that plays into creating reusable code, always a plus in my book. I'm more of a PureMVC fan myself, and the code they present is a variation of adobe's Cairngorm.

Various places they make comments to elements in the adobe flex 3 training from the source book. I'm off to get a copy of that now as a good in depth how it works book.

This is definitely worth picking up especially if you are new to Air. Not overpoweringly long either.
