Refreshing and still a classic

From my own experience, I've always been frustrated with the tendency of the architecture community to either completely overlook the aesthetic works of the great structural engineers or shamelessly claim them as their own. This book is beyond a simple consensus of great engineering works; it is Billington's clear and rational case for the distinction of the discipline of Structural Art - the engineer's means of expression - from that of Architecture.

This book is just the thing any student or young professional in structural engineering should have along with their library of technical books. Instead of explaining the aesthetics and beauty of structures in vague architectural terms, Billington looks at them in terms of the technical (formwork, stress diagrams, material economy, etc.). When has an architectural critic discussed the elegance behind a moment diagram?

I think anyone who loves architecture and great works of engineering will appreciate this book. If you like this, I would also recommend Billington's 'Robert Maillart and the Art of Reinforced Concrete' and Salvadori's 'Why Buildings Stand Up'.

Detailed exploration of Structural Art

Billington goes through the evolution of structural art/expressionism in great detail. It is helpful to have a preexisting knowledge about the various engineers/artist discussed in this text, however, it is not necessary. This book is very interesting and encourages the engineer to consider the aesthetic consequences of structures.
It is an inspiring book to read (and re-read) and is packed full of historical bridges and other structures (like thin concrete shells). I highly recommend it to engineering students with an interest in structures.

As a horse racing fan and equestrian enthusiast there are many horses that stand out to me as most remarkable athletes within their chosen field; whether that be jumping over the highest of fences at Hickstead or the Eventing dream ride for Piggy French at Badminton horse trials, I could quite easily make a list of top racehorses that have gone down in history books as world-class greats. Paul Nicholls is an incredible and well established racing trainer whose horse Kauto Star has really stood out as an impressive creature, winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice in a row. His noble face makes for a striking front cover to this autobiography of a most remarkable man, who had what he calls a `lucky break' in his training career and something which I feel is most deserved. This narrative is an honest account of Paul Nicholl's astonishing transformation from a keen pony lover and amateur jockey to a record breaking champion horse trainer, with over one thousand seven hundred winners over jumps. He stands at the very pinnacle of the sport with many big-race victories including those achieved by two stand-out horses; Kauto Star and Denman (also known affectionately as `the tank'). Fast-paced and exciting you are taken on a most extraordinary journey from Gymkhana's at the Pony Club and pony racing on flighty little animals to when Paul's dreams of becoming a jockey were crushed due to his weight and the years of torment when he rode at two stone under his natural weight. This determined and single-minded man then turned to the training of these magnificent creatures and started up a yard from nothing, with eight horses and very small savings alongside limitless ambition and willpower. The rivalry between Martin Pipe (another incredible trainer) and Paul is explained in all intensity, as too is the story of my two favorite racehorses who won the Gold Cup at Cheltenham three times between them.
This is a compelling and truly fascinating sports biography that is uplifting, enthusing and thought-provoking to the core about a man who fought hard to get to the top. About the Author
A former journalist and communication professor, John McManus writes and lectures about changes in news media and their impact on democracy. His 1994 book, "Market-Driven Journalism: Let the Citizen Beware?" won the annual research award from the Society of Professional Journalists. So did his 2009 college textbook, "Detecting Bull: How to Identify Bias and Junk Journalism in Print, Broadcast and on the Wild Web." In 2000, he founded GradeTheNews.org. Using Consumer Reports as a model, the project scientifically sampled the most popular newspapers and newscasts in the San Francisco Bay Area and rated them head-to-head on seven yardsticks of journalism quality. Grade the News was funded by the Gerbode, Knight and Ford Foundations and received both national and regional awards.

Great news literacy resource

John McManus' deep understanding of both journalism and of the type of critical inquiry and reflection that is at the heart of media literacy is clearly visible on every page of this work. It is absolutely packed with news literacy examples and insights. I'd expect nothing less from the man who was behind Grade the News. And don't be fooled by the self-published thing; That was a political decision. This is no vanity piece and it would absolutely meet the quality standards of any major publisher. I highly recommend it.

I would have bought this book, but his academic ...

I would have bought this book, but his academic credentials and the tone of his first few pages suggest he only believes in Right Wing bias. Are there any examples of left wing bias?? He is also a self proclaimed social justice advocate--code language for 'hard-core liberal'. I think I'll wait for something and someone less biased to come along.
