A good book to help you code numerical methods in MATLAB

I use this book. It is very short, but well written.
If you want to learn numerical methods - Use Burden & Faires.
But this book is for the end - user of the MATLAB numerical methods. It also gives some background info on these methods.

Wasn't the book described

The description given about the book did not correspond with the book I received. The book I received was not a hardcover nor was it the 550 pages as described. It was the paperback version that contained 384 pages. However, regardless of being paperback rather than hardcover, it was still the same book I needed. I ordered it on thursday, and received it on monday. The shipping was extremely fast and I'm very happy about it, because I needed this book ASAP to do my studies. And the price of the book couldn't be beat, I practically saved 60 bucks for a new book.

Great Book

This is a well-written book that provides a nice, concise introduction to numerical methods. As with other books by this author, it is very student friendly and should be particularly useful for people, like myself, who use it for self-study. I was not familiar with MATLAB prior to using the book. This book made it relatively easy for me to pick up the fundamentals and then implement numerical solutions. As a computer scientist, I also liked the emphasis placed on the development of M-files. My only criticism is that I wish the book covered more material. I hope that the author expands it in future editions.

Classic Text

This book is truly a classic in the power engineering field. I consider this book good for the following reasons:

a) The book covers the "bread and butter" issues that every power systems engineer would need. An outstanding example of this is the fact that the book covers protective relaying.

b)The book uses straightforward examples.

I consider this book on par with Stevenson's Power Systems Analysis book in that it is not cluttered with mathematical manipulation.

While no one can argue that computers play a bigger role in power systems computation today than they did even 10 years ago, many of the other books on my book shelf collect dust because Gross's book takes the time to go into why we are doing calculations and what they mean. It is relatively unimportant how you make calculations than what they mean and how to use them.

I have heard Dr. Charlie Gross lecture in continuing education courses at Auburn and I can attest to his skill in explaining things to students.

Avoided the Best Mistakes

Nobody's reviewed this yet? What's going on here? I've had this for many years, and I probably learned most of what I know about power systems from it. If you've tried many highly technical books, you'll REALLY understand when I say that it's just a plain, old, decent book -- does what it's supposed to do without any of it botched. He covers both equipment and connections and, e.g., positive/negative/zero sequence analytical stuff. If you're not eating beans and rice 3 times a day due to low income, this is an investment for you! By the way, Gross has long been the Square D Professor at Auburn U.

Wonderful book

This is an excellent book which tells the story of emerging rights for people with developmental disabilities. It is told through the eyes of families that chose to not send their children to an institution. They needed better school programs, better laws, and better support for appropriate jobs and long-term, humane housing. These people didn't take no for an answer and banded together to make change happen. It is inspirational.

The case of the grazing cooperative Ganados del Valle, which sought access to land set aside for elk hunting, represents a subaltern group fighting the elitism of natural resource policy in an effort to pursue a pastoral lifestyle. In both instances Pulido details the ways in which racism and economic subordination create subaltern communities, and shows how these groups use available resources to mobilize and improve their social, economic, and environmental conditions. Environmentalism and Economic Justice reveals that the environmental struggles of Chicano communities do not fit the mold of mainstream environmentalism, as they combine economic, identity, and quality-of-life issues. Laura Pulido is an assistant professor of geography at the University of Southern California. A native of Los Angeles, she is a member of the Labor/Community Strategy Center and has served as a commissioner for the Environmental Affairs Department of the city of Los Angeles.
