A informative book for us laymens.

WOW!!!

I've been looking on the web at making fuel for some time and never felt I was getting the whole picture. This is ALL the info you will ever need on the subject. From system setup throught dealing with waste, this book explains it all in laymens terms. It shows that making fuel is not going to be the easyest thing you ever do. In the same breath, it shows that its within reach of us "normal" people.

It really a very informative but light read. Not only the process is reviewed, but also the economics and history. Definitly worth the read weither you want to make fuel, or just learn more about the subject.

Truly Comprehensive

I thought the summary of this book was a little vague in the product description section, and I was a little worried I wouldn't be getting a book that actually explains how to build your own biodiesel refinery. My fears were for naught though; as it turns out, the author gives detailed schematics and explanations of all the components of his own refinery he himself built, even including pipe coupling sizes. He also includes an entire chapter on how to operate the system. And if you don't have the means (like myself) or ability to build a plant as sophisticated as the author's, he even gives an overview of a much more rudimentary system that someone else built, but by the time one finishes the book, more than likely it will seem better to just save up the extra money and do it the right way.

This is a very unbiased book, providing lots of scientific data and tests to support different points the author tries to make in favor and against home brewing biodiesel. I found out everything I was hoping to about building my own biodiesel refinery.

more like a coffee table book than an info book, just wished had introduced more plants.
Buy this if you are completely new to indoor plants and saw beautiful trendy interiors on Instagram, this books talks about the most trendy plants right now.
Buy this if intend to use it as a display or showing guests your tastes, the photos of plants and homes are beautiful.
Don't get me wrong, I bought two of these and gave one as a gift because the book is indeed artistically made and to support the author, but
save the money if you already own more than one indoor plant and try to broaden your indoor plant knowledge.
If you want to style your home with indoor plants, try Instagram or Pinterest.

I like books that inspire and remind me of the bigger picture. It helps me stay on track with my goals and keep a good perspective. That's what this book does. And let's face it, frequent reminders about the big picture are very helpful while parenting.

I especially appreciated the author's support for discipline, which did not encourage corporal punishment, but rather a structure for setting goals and boundaries. Whilst there are many parts of this book that I feel I have heard before there are also many things that I hadn’t heard. Speaking as a mother it was also good to see confirmation that I am not doing too bad a job.
Although this book is about raising youth many aspects of this book can be applied to your life no matter what your age is.
In many ways I was undecided how many stars to give this book. In many ways because I feel I have heard this advice many times before I was leaning towards 3 stars. However, I only came across this advice much later in life and this is the sort of advice someone had given me when I was a child, and for that reason I give it a 4.

American Govt. - another textbook

This is a fairly standard US Govt. textbook. It is well organized and thorough and includes a reasonably diverse number of contributors. It is widely used by colleges and universities at the introductory level. It is a little left leaning, but confirms that most colleges and universities lean that way too. This may not be good for those with undeveloped political minds or those unacquainted with history, because you have little to compare the text with. However, for those with a knowledge base, who have a set of political opinions and they know why they hold them, this book can provide a basis of debate that may further refine your political beliefs.

Enchanting world of Jack Brennin doesn't let you down!

I originally bought this book for my grand daughter to read on my kindle and decided to read it my self. Once that I started I couldn't stop. Now don't go into this book expecting Harry Potter because if you do you will be greatly disappointed. Read this book for what it is, an adventure of young boy named Jack who is the long awaited defender of a secret world who goes through a journey learning about his new life and how it transforms him into a new creation. Do yourself a favor, after you finish this book, buy the remainder of the series and continue reading about Jack's new world, you will enjoy it!

the Consultant and the Pregnant Midwife~ a GEM~

in the Middle of snowstorm consultant Jake Blackwell finds a pretty woman in need of his "rescue" he ends up with an unexpected guest~ mean while he is become very very attracted to the beautiful woman called Miranda~ who is his "guest" when she disppears he is upset. The next day he finds MIRANDA is the midwife in his department and she is also about 6 months pregnant~ the fun is having a woman who trusts NO one and has been hurt in the passed having the GOOD Dr. HUNK suddenly making all the right moves~ this is a wonderful Christmas story and one of my favorites by Sarah Morgan. Jake has his choice of any woman but decides he will not allow any more time to pass before he makes Miranda know just how he feels~ I GIVE IT A SOLID 10 OUT OF 10 FOR MEDICAL ROMANCES, EXCELLENT PLOT AND CHARACTERS~ MOVES ALONG NICELY.

A welcome move towards greater cultural understanding in a global society

We live in world of increasing globalization, the effects of which are creating fundamental changes in the way we live and come to construct our identities. The Kenneth W. Mildenberger prize winning Cultural Globalization and Language Education by B. Kumaravadivelu is a timely and welcome addition to the scholarly literature examining the impact of cultural globalization on language education in the twenty-first century. Drawing from multiple disciplines, Kumaravadivelu highlights the critical limitations of the three Western cultural concepts of assimilation, pluralism, and hybridity that have so far informed the cultural component of foreign language education, arguing that they have "a limited and limiting relevance" to language education due to increasing cultural globalization.

Cultural Globalization and Language Education challenges long held assumptions about the role of culture in language teaching. Although written for a wide audience, the book will especially resonate with graduate students, language teachers, and researchers. In an era in which the forces of globalization push and pull in ways that can make the construction of self-identity difficult, Kumaravadivelu's call to develop "global cultural consciousness" in learners grounded in the notion of cultural realism is a welcome move towards greater cultural understanding in a global society. How should language education treat culture?

The idea that language teaching should include a cultural element is well established. Typically, it has involved teaching learners about the cultural practices and institutions of the 'target culture,' such as holidays and festivals, gift-giving routines, and important places and buildings in the country where the language is spoken. Kumaravadivelu's argument is essentially that the way language education has handled culture is inadequate, and should be replaced by practices that develop in learners what he calls a global cultural consciousness.

Kumaravadivelu's critique of culture in language education centers on the essentializing of cultures, that is, seeing them as fixed, static, and separate entities. The characterization of Asian students by many in the ESL profession as passive and uncritical is an example, as is Robert Kaplan's popular categorization of rhetorical styles in various cultures, that portrays thinking in English as a straight line and the thinking of other cultures as (for example) zig-zagging or circular. Such views betray a nativism in the thinking of English speakers in the U.S., reflecting a wider societal nativism discernible in notions of cultural assimilation and the English-only movement. Cultural pluralism, or multiculturalism, was a step forward in recognizing the value of different cultures, but failed to address the inequalities between mainstream and minority communities. Cultural hybridity rejected essentialism and opened up the possibility of multiple cultures in one person, but notions such as Kramsch's 'third place' carried the risk of diluting one's identity.

For Kumaravadivelu, the way forward is cultural realism, a combination of a postmodern, constructivist view of identity formation and the recognition that in the 21st century identities are formed in the midst of global, national, societal, and individual contexts. Language teaching should recognize that cultural learning is not simply the receiving of information, but the transformation of one's identity and consciousness; teachers should therefore help learners construct their cultural identities and develop a global cultural consciousness that reflects the shifting and dynamic nature of the global reality that learners occupy.

These are heady ideas, and for many educators they may be too far removed from the realities of daily teaching to be practicable, in spite of Kumaravadivelu's including a complete unit of work to illustrate how they might be realized in the classroom. It also seems doubtful that students in an ESL program in the U.S.,told that they were about to develop their 'global cultural consciousness,' would embrace that as a goal. Nonetheless, it is hard to deny the dynamic cultural reality that Kumaravadivelu describes; and the constructivist approach to identity which suggests that many learners will need to 'grow into' that global cultural consciousness is quite persuasive. This book covers a huge amount of ground for its size, and for anyone who wants to engage with big-picture thinking, it gives plenty of food for thought.

Not a reference and not much useful programming information

I worked over halfway through this book before giving up on it. I know a little programming, and was hoping that a "developer's reference" would be full of information about how to do things like control applications and manipulate files with AppleScript, but this book mostly reads like an advertisement for what AppleScript can do, without actually showing the reader how to do very much of it at all, other than pop up a dialog box congratulating you for assigning a value to a variable.

There is very little explanation of programming logic in this volume, although the examples are short and very simple, so if you were not familiar with programming, the book probably would not be overly complicated. But it seems too simple to me: it does not have much to say about control statements nor how to structure anything more involved than a single command at a time. And the examples are not only short, but several of them are repeated almost verbatim, without adding any new concepts, as though the book were not edited to eliminate redundant passages.

If you know any programming at all, Apple's own AppleScript Language Guide is much more of a developer's reference than this book. If you do not know programming, I would advise looking elsewhere for better grounding in how to construct useful scripts. I certainly would not recommend this book to anyone interested in learning something about scripting in general or AppleScript in particular. The only thing this book has going for it is its rank simplicity, but even beginners are going to get tired of endless dialog box payoffs in the place of useful scripts.

As a theatre director, I have read a lot of books about other directors and stagecraft, and far fewer about the intimate work of the actor. I never got around to making a close study of voice until now, and FTNV has been a wonderful revelation for me.

Not only is Linklater's work imagistically strong and physically clear, but the thoughtful and careful way she approaches "release" seems a metaphor that extends well beyond the borders of the voice. It has inspired me in all facets of my artistic work. Wonderful, insightful, highly recommended.

Just goes to show you CAN improve on a classic.

The original edition rightly cast Linklater as a leading figure in the world of voice training for actors and professional speakers. This edition is clearer, more specific, more exciting and more accessible. Greatly expanded, with useful (and diverse) illustrations, the text moves easily from theory to practice, with detailed exercises, musings, and references to a broad range of disciplines.
While nothing can substitute for learning this discipline from a qualified teacher, this book serves as an excellent road guide and reminder/refresher for the serious student or teacher.
As a professional linguist I can also vouch for the sound scientific grounding and accuracy of the discussion of the vocal process, which is all too often either lacking from dramatic voice work or else is so detailed that the student gets mired in anatomical minutiae and loses sight of the practical goal. Linklater ingeniously balances the science and art of voice in this improved classic.
