About the Author
William Earl Maxwell is a professor emeritus at San Antonio College, where he has taught courses in U.S. and Texas government since 1971. Throughout his career Maxwell has focused on innovative teaching techniques and improving the teaching and learning environments for students. As part of that effort, in 1975 Maxwell co-authored UNDERSTANDING TEXAS POLITICS, his first text on Texas government. He also co-authored such texts as POLITICS IN TEXAS and THE CHALLENGE OF TEXAS POLITICS: TEXT WITH READINGS. He completed his undergraduate and graduate work at Sam Houston State University.

A thirty-five year veteran instructor of political science, Ernest Crain specializes in political party competition, comparative state politics, and Texas public policy. Crain co-authored UNDERSTANDING TEXAS POLITICS, POLITICS IN TEXAS, THE CHALLENGE OF TEXAS POLITICS, and four editions of INTRODUCTION TO TEXAS POLITICS. Crain received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Texas in Austin.

Mark P. Jones is the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy's Fellow in Political Science, the Joseph D. Jamail Chair in Latin American Studies, and the Chair of the Department of Political Science at Rice University. Jones is a frequent commentator on Texas politics in the state and national media, and his research on the Texas Legislature is widely cited by media outlets and political campaigns. Jones received his B.A. from Tulane University and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

M. Lynn Davis is a full professor of Government at El Paso Community College. Her specialties include political theory, communication, and process. She has written articles on political discourse and the primary/caucus debate and has edited several textbooks. She currently serves as Government Faculty Coordinator and teaches and mentors other faculty in Blackboard Software. Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Davis earned her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from the University of Texas at El Paso.

Christopher Wlezien is Hogg Professor of Government at the University of Texas at Austin. Previously a professor of political science at Temple University, Dr. Wlezien has published in several political science journals, has edited THE FUTURE OF ELECTIONS STUDIES and BRITAIN VOTES, and was founding co-editor of the Journal of Elections, Public Opinion, and Parties. His research interests include developing a "thermostatic" model of public opinion and policy and examining the interrelationships between preferences for spending and budgetary policy in various domains, and the evolution of voter preferences over the election cycle. A past president of the SWPSA, Dr. Wlezien received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa.

About the Author
Norman Gaither is Professor Emeritus of Business Analysis and Research at Texas A&M University. He received his Ph.D. and MBA from the University of Oklahoma and his B.S.I.E. from Oklahoma State University. Prior to teaching, Professor Gaither worked at Olin Corporation, where he held the positions of chief industrial engineer, plant manager, and director of a multiplant operation, and at B.F. Goodrich Company as senior industrial engineer. Professor Gaither's writings on a wide range of operations management topics have appeared in Management Science, Decision Sciences, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Simulation, Journal of Purchasing and Materials Management, IIE Transactions, Journal of Cost Analysis, and International Journal of Operations and Production Management. Dr. Gaither has served on the editorial boards of several highly respected journals in the operations management field. He is also an AACSB Federal Faculty Fellow.

Useful for undergraduate students

The book shows the different topics about operations management with several excercises and mini-cases. The mini-cases are not so complex. These mini cases are designed for tools applications but don't help to build a business system concept or a bussiness problem, something very important for MBA students. That is the reason because this book is appropiate for undergraduate students in Bussiness or as a complement material for graduate students.
Also, the book needs to improve the explanation of process choice or process tipology, both for goods and services. It is something confuse.
I have the spanish edition book with a software (POM) in a CD included. This software has some applications as forecasting, linear programming, proyect management, mrp, among others,in a simple format. But POMS for Windows (H.Weiss), DS for Windows(H.Weiss) and HOM software have more modules and let you try more complex situations.

I have the 7th edition. I would like to make you see that the book should be more explicit about where to find the complements like teacher's manual, softwares, videos, etc. that is mentioned in the preface to be available.

Its quite thin and lacking

Its basically the chapter in the Pocket Medicine made into a thin notebook. Having read and used Pocket Medicine, Pocket Neurology, Pocket Emergency Medicine, Pocket Anesthesiology and Pocket ICU, and as a graduated Cardiologist myself, it frankly leaves a lot to wish for. Yes, its a bit more up to date and refines a few rough corners, but its quite lacking. Its esentially only the chapter of Cardiology in the Pocket Medicine Book. Cardiology is a vast specilaty, complex and much much more than what this "summary" has. I suggest a review of the american and european guidelines next time, and including LOTS of the tables and diagrams in these in the next edition. Missing subjects: Adult Congenital Heart Diseases, shunt quantification and measurements, Cath Lab: left and right heart, Pregnancy and Cardiology, specially anticoagulation for pregnancy. Advanced cardiac support devices and heart transplantation, types, indications and contraindications, In summary: Disappointing.

A lifetime resource as well as a great introduction

I'm surprised I've studied Anthropology this long without this book. It is simple, linear and effective. David Fetterman takes the beginner through all the necessary thought processes and equipment required to do research. More importantly, he includes a whole section of resource material in one book. Everything from Web sites with research data to List Serves that have anthropological material to associations, their phone numbers, email addresses and Web sites. He includes a detailed listing of software and freeware that can help a reseacher, complete with a brief explanation of the use and value.
Moreover, he noted that when the first edition came out in 1989, there was no World Wide Web, so that by the time this book was published in 1998, it was undoubtedly already out of date. Subsequently, he has set up a Web page to accompany the text with a more up-to-date listing of software, freeware, List Serves, technological advances and WebSites.
This book is a great tool!
Fetterman gives user friendly definitions of many of the most daunting terms in the field of anthropology.
Emic = insider's or native's perspective. Etic = external or social science perspective. Proxemitics = study of how the socially defined physical distance between people varies in differing social circumstances. Kinesics = body language study. Operationalism = defining one's terms and methods of measurement. Terms like micro and macro level studies, open and closed probes, structural and attribute questions are not only defined, but are put into practice with short examples.
Fetterman briefly describes research methods such as projection techniques and triangulation -- gives examples of their use, advantages and drawbacks.
He details specific uses for specific programs, like MicNotePad that turns the researchers portable computer into a tape recorder and aids in transcribing the material.
This book is an essential tool for any student, undergrad, graduate or post graduate in anthropology or social sciences in general.

A "How To" Guide

Fetterman explains in sequential fashion how to do an ethnographic study. He describes ethnography as "the art and science of describing a group or culture" (p. 11) The first step in the process is for the researcher to enter the field of study with an open mind. In attempting to describe a setting, there is no one acceptable standard. Multiple interpretations of reality exist. A study is one person's view of a given group, at a particular time. Although this limitation is a given, an ethnographer should seek to be holistic in presenting a study's findings (p. 21). An ethnographic study would include both structure and function. Structure is the social structure or configuration of the group. Function is the social relations among group members. Like systems theory, relationships are significant components of an ethnographic study. Symobolic communication is significant in revealing what is important to the people being studied. As an observer, a researcher using this approach is a human instrument. There are some biases, but the more experience one develops, the better one can develop his or her skills of observation. Fetterman goes on to talk about the difference between writing good field notes and writing the final report. In all the book clearly shows how to go about the process of doing an ethnographic study.

Poorly designed book and outdated material for a big price.

Tiny book. Big price. The fact that you are paying $40 for a book that explains what a PDA is and talks about how to use the internet is just wrong. Yes, there are good chunks of information in the book about what ethnography is and how to approach it, but for the price this is not enough. Maybe 10 years ago this would have been work $40. Not anymore. Also, the book itself uses cheap paper stock, renders grainy black and white images, and holds little value with its cheap binding. At $12 – $15 I may have given this book four stars.

John Galsworthy was a Nobel-Prize (1932) winning English dramatist, novelist, and poet born to an upper-middle class family in Surrey, England. Love this book! This truly is a must read if you have kids or honestly this is a great book even if you don't have kids. So many times I would read a line that would jump out and grab me. The line, "the beauty of the death of control", was such a perfect line, as a control freak myself it was a great reminder to give up that need to control everything. This by far is one of the best parenting books I've ever read. Not only is it informative and thought provoking, it is also a quick read that is very humorous. About the Author
Richard is a life-long cook, music lover, and outdoor enthusiast. He quit his Wall Street job at age 24 and has been a private investor since then. For the last 12 years, he's made his home base in Crested Butte, Colorado, a ski town 9,000 feet above sea level where he has pursued life as a mountain biker, back country skier, and for the last 18 years, a father of two boys.

Take responsibility for your own life

When I read the description of Richard Melnick's book, I half expected to read about his ordeals as a cancer patient and the devastating effects the disease had on his life and his family. In his book, however, he barely mentioned cancer, with only very brief references to his surgery and follow-up chemotherapy. Instead, the book was part memoir, part personal philosophy, and part parenting primer, and it was fascinating reading on each of those levels.

I think the most compelling element of the book was about the author's personal philosophy and the ways in which he passed his life lessons on to his two sons. He was neither a "spare the rod and spoil the child" dad, nor was he his sons' best pal. In his words, all a parent can do for their child is to marvel at them, provide for them, and teach them a few life skills. Instead of autocratically imposing dozens of rules on his sons, he told them, "Your choice is the company you keep, the behavior you model, and the boundaries you enforce for yourself." As his sons approached an age when they were subject to temptations that could derail their lives, he gave them practical advice about love, women, drugs, even an appreciation for the value of music in their lives.

This was not just another book on parenting advice, by any means. Nor is Richard Melnick a typical parent. How many parents do you know who have traveled to India and had a personal audience with the Dalai Lama? And how many parenting books include the author's favorite recipes? (The chocolate chip cookies look yummy, by the way, and I'm definitely going to try the tip for cooking the perfect burger.)

In reviewing books, I don't always mention an author's writing style, usually referring to it only if it stands out, one way or another. I have to say that Mr. Melnick writes some of the most literate nonfiction prose that I've read in a while, with each paragraph having been carefully crafted to say what he means with no wasted words. It was a refreshing break from too many books that read as if the author is being paid by the word.

a powerful 100 page package

Richard Melnick's lovely little book of 100 pages is little in size but not in meaning. If we have the privilege to be parents, raising our children is the most important and challenging job we are entrusted with. Richard's natural instincts about how to raise his sons (without the micromanagement that seems to be the theme of modern day) is downright refreshing. He also simultaneously helps us understand the ways in which he has grown and become more enlightened. He shares techniques for living in the moment yet being a responsible human and parent, and treating small tasks such as dishwashing with wonder. As a psychiatrist I am often suggesting books to patients (and friends) when they seem overwhelmed both with their pace of life and the daunting task of parenting. This is now on the top of my list. Richard's humor, compassion, and wisdom make this book a must-read. Somehow that fact that he went through a divorce and cancer never make one feel the least bit sorry for him, as he used those experiences to grow ever more appreciative of the time he has on earth. In full disclosure I recently met him through his absolutely fabulous son Jackson, who is a treasure to have on our planet. I am so glad Jackson has been nurtured by his dad (and mom) to be the vastly creative and kind soul he was meant to be. Stifling such a lovely mind and spirit so they fit into some 'societal mold' is probably happening all too often by parents who are just blindly doing what their parents modeled, or even worse, what they think will get their kids into the proper college. Richard's love of cooking and his lessons to his boys about cleaning the kitchen are lessons that we all can continue to use even if our children are grown. I also look forward to trying his recipes, and passing the wisdom of his words with others. Lori Adelson MD

Growing Better Men

"Richard Melnick is creating a paradigm for himself and his 2 sons which is largely absent in our culture of men, and in our society in general. This missing link is the development of male consciousness through the various rites of passage which have been part of the male ritual in times past. In his personal family context Richard is assisting this very vital passage of his sons through the ritual of transforming their pain so that they do not transmit their pain. He is recreating, reestablishing, and reinitiating the male way of feeling in his sons. Such spiritual feeling comes through the inevitable sufferings and so-called failures, and what we do with them as we emerge. Our current social ambience and attendant electronic gadgetry attempts to distract us all, male and female, from the growth with which we are tasked by normal living. The best teachers are those who walk the journey with us. And so it is with Richard and his sons. Be so inspired yourself."
