About the Author
David Maxson is Managing Partner of Broadcast Signal Lab, LLP, which he co-founded in 1982 to serve the needs of radio and television stations in the northeastern United States. Under his direction, Broadcast Signal Lab provides a full spectrum of technical services related to radio frequency safety, regulatory compliance, compatibility and interference issues. David also consults with emerging wireless and broadcasting technology companies on digital media deployment issues. For twenty years David served Charles River Broadcasting Company, whose flagship station was classical radio WCRB, Boston. As Vice President, Director of Engineering he was responsible for technical and engineering matters for the company's radio stations, its classical music production and syndication company, and its commercial sound system company. David is Broadcast Signal Lab's representative to the National Radio Systems Committee (NRSC) Digital Audio Broadcasting Subcommittee. With the NRSC, he was closely involved with the testing and evaluation of proposed In-Band, On-Channel (IBOC) digital radio broadcasting systems, which ultimately led to a formal IBOC standard in April of 2005. David chaired the NRSC DAB Data Multiplexing and Transport Task Group. He has published and presented numerous technical papers on IBOC signal measurement technique and on data broadcasting technology.

It is a comprehensive and logical progression from the basics through implementation considerations. A historical perspective detailing the development of the current standards is also included. If you ever wondered how or why some aspect of digital radio broadcasting is done, the answer is very likely within the pages of this all-inclusive book. Understanding how IBOC works, better enables a broadcaster to troubleshoot and evaluate any potential problems which might arise. This book provides an in-depth explanation of the In Band On Channel signal.

Not since the development of FM by Edwin Howard Armstrong over 70 years ago has the radio industry been `evolutionized' as with the adoption of IBOC (aka "HD Radio"). David P. Maxson's book brings to the reader a carefully structured tutorial on the technologies used in IBOC. His clear, readable prose is complemented with numerous illustrations and annotated with helpful sidebars guiding the reader from understanding of the initial creation of the AM and FM IBOC bit streams from audio and text, to the IBOC receiver itself.
The casual reader will grasp IBOC in concept, but the serious reader will appreciate Maxson's detailed explanations of each elegant component of the IBOC scheme...complemented with equation, example, and metaphor to help the reader really understand what's going on, each chapter building on the knowledge gleaned from the previous chapters.

A must for parents, teachers, politicians and anyone else who cares about schools

It is incredibly hard to figure out how good a school is, especially compared to other schools. For a long time, we have used test scores to judge schools -- and even students!! But what do those scores really mean? We all remember teachers who were easy graders or hard graders, or even inconsistent graders. It turns out that "standardized tests" are no more straightforward than the grades we all got in school. Measuring Up explains how and why. Because test scores are now used as to judge students, schools and even to compare schools, this might be the single most important topic in education, certainly for non-educators and perhaps for educators as well.

The brilliant thing about this book is how clear and easy to follow it is. Educational testing is a technical field, but the author explains it in terms that those outside the field can understand. Through generous use of examples and personal anecdotes, Daniel Koretz shows both how thing work and how they fail to work. Having read this, you will not only know the ways are supposed to be, but the reality of how things really are. Koretz shares stories from his own experiences the illustrate what is really going on.

Because testing is here to stay, this book will remain a gem for many years, but it is especially timely today. NCLB is up for reauthorization soon, and testing remains the most controversial part of the law. Most of the debates about the law are about testing, and it looks like the the most active voices in the debates -- be they politicians, parents or the press -- have rather little understanding of the underlying issues.

Measuring Up does not shy from the controversial or most difficult questions about testing. There's a chapter about testing and special education, a chapter about test bias and one about inflated test results. Do not think, however, the author is an opponent of standardized testing. Rather, he want them to be used properly and their results to be understood. He does not want students or schools to be rewarded or punished because tests are misused or are poorly designed in the first place.

If you are a parent trying to choose a school for your children or a neighborhood to live in, this book will make you a really smart consumer of test score information. If you are a teacher working in the NCLB paradigm, this book will help you to understand both the real strengths and the real weaknesses of this system. If you work in or care about education policy -- local school board member, policy analyst, department of education worker, elected official, member of a PTA or concerned member of the community -- this book will show you what you really need to understand to make informed decisions about testing and how your schools and/districts ought to respond to respond to test results.

This truly is a great book. If I were ran a school, I'd make every teacher read it. If I ran a school leadership program, I'd make it a core text. And if I worked for an elected official, I'd make him/her read it.

A Fair and Balanced Presentation of the What Standardized Tests Can and Cannot Do

Professor Koretz teaches a course on standardized testing for non-statisticians at Harvard. This book is based on that course. There is no complicated math, but lots of clear explanations and easily understood examples. What I found most interesting was that much of the information about the limits of these tests came not from their critics, but from their developers. This should be required reading for all who work with the results of these tests. I only wish that more of Professor Koretz's examples had come from the California Standards Tests that I have to give each year.

Quantitative Statistics and Educational Measurement for the "Rest of Us"

This book covers all of the important material that I found covered in a Master's-Level course on Statistical Methods in Assessment, but is presented with great clarity and without the details of many of the numerical methods. I have long searched for a way to explain to those without a strong mathematical or statistical background just how complex the issues are when it comes to collecting, summarizing, and making decisions based on educational "data".

So far I have found both this book and Standardized Minds: The High Price of America's Testing Culture and What We Can Do to Change It to do a good job of this. This book is much stronger in its presentation of the statistical methods and their limitations, and it does not take sides. The latter book, which has a clear anti-testing bias, explains both the statistical difficulties and societal consequences of the way tests are currently used.

Expand Your Mind

This book came out several years ago, before 9-11 in fact. In my own words, not the author's, "Jihad" is used as a catchall for fundamentalist type societies and "McWorld" is used as a catchall for Western culture and capitalism. Here's my nutshell version: Barber is of the opinion, ala "how ya gonna keep em down on the farm..." that the more that fundamentalist societies are exposed to western technology and "luxuries," the harder it will be for people like the Ayatollahs to control them I don't think he necessarily believes that McWorld is the correct answer, just a more likely result as we all become more and more enveloped in technology. I found this book both educational and optimistic in tone.

Interesting characters & storyline but poor editing was more than I could take

The main characters were fun to meet. Liam is good-natured, teasing, and honest. He asks his sister-in-law Emma to invite her friend Julia to come to Montana as a possible mail-order bride for him. Julia agrees, and proves herself to be a worthy partner for him, even when unexpected challenges come their way.

This is the second book in the series. I love the Donovan family and felt Liam and Julia were better developed characters than Ethan and Emma in the first book. The series isn't riveting, but the characters are engaging and family-oriented, which I liked. However, I really struggled with the poor editing of the book. These are things that a simple proofreading should have caught and were distracting to me. A few examples:

First, before the first book began, Liam's sister-in-law Susan died in childbirth. This isn't a spoiler to anyone as it is mentioned as soon as Ethan's character is introduced. The family refers to her as Susan throughout the entire first book, but in Liam and Julia's book she is called Allison. Why?

Second, Julia and Emma grew up in an orphanage in Boston and remained close after leaving the orphanage at age 18 and finding work in the city. Emma worked as a kitchen assistant and Julia as an accounting clerk. Emma was better prepared to be a Montana bride because she could cook. When Julia arrives in Montana, the first thing Emma does is teach Julia to cook, starting with bread. Yet several chapters later she notices they are nearly out of bread and makes a mental note to ask Emma to teach her how to bake bread.

Third, one of the challenges Liam and Julia face comes from someone in the community. When a situation arises that is scary and threatening, Julia shares the experience with Emma and they talk about their shared shock and fear. Two days later, Julia talks with Emma about it again as if Emma is hearing it for the first time.

Each time I took a minute to go back and see if I had remembered the story wrong, and each time I was correct. It felt like I was reading the first rough draft of the story rather than a polished version. It was distracting and detracted from the overall story. I have no plans to read any of the other stories in the series now.

Enjoyed reading about Liam and Julia. I like knowing what happens to characters that were mentioned in a previous book. this is a sweet short story the one thing I found interesting was the discussion of depression. Would doctors know about depression? Question for the author. enjoy reading this romance.

very sweet love story with a bit of mystery

There was nothing new or complex in the story by Ashley Merrick. Just short and sweet a romance that read like a mail order bride novel although Julia was one of the orphans from the Boston Catholic orphanage That was turned out at age 18to make room for other younger children. She was talented in mathematics and when she lost her job felt it was time to join her friend Emily,in Montana,in the hope of becoming her sister in law. Liam was an interesting man with his outgoing personality and dealing with depression at the same time. The cure for Liam was interesting too Then there were the attempts on Liam's life. 4 stars

Colonial nutrition investigations and interventions in Africa began earlier than scholars have commonly assumed. Comparative details of African village nutritional conditions, as well as the specifics of British colonial scientific nutrition projects, are presented in this historical perspective on Africa's early colonial nutrition legacy. British colonial scientific nutrition projects in Nyasaland (Malawi), especially data from the Nyasaland Nutrition Survey and the first Nutrition Development Unit, form the foundation of this book. The ultimate conclusions British nutritionists derived from the surveys were misleading-both in terms of what was needed and what could be accomplished. Brantley examines and contextualizes this rich and obscure data.

The comparative complexities of African village life illustrate the degree to which Africans drew on rich historical and cultural combinations in their efforts to adapt to constant change, and the challenges of meeting their nutritional requirements. By highlighting gendered aspects of feeding families, the specific ways that colonialism transformed African lives, and the ways in which colonial officers believed in the superiority of British technological and scientific expertise, Brantley offers suggestive insights about many of the problems that linger in contemporary nutritional development projects.

Arno Berger is associate professor of mathematics at the University of Alberta. He is the author of Chaos and Chance: An Introduction to Stochastic Aspects of Dynamics. Theodore P. Hill is professor emeritus of mathematics at the Georgia Institute of Technology and research scholar in residence at the California Polytechnic State University.

A monograph on the mathematical theory of Benford's Law

This book is intended to be a fairly complete compilation of the mathematical theory of Benford's Law. As the authors note (page 223), "the main goal of this book has been to develop a solid and comprehensive theoretical basis for the appearance of Benford's law in a broad range of mathematical settings." So far as I can judge, they have succeeded. Similarly, in the Preface they write "this text is a self-contained comprehensive treatment of the theory of Benford's law that includes formal definitions and proofs, open problems, dozens of basis theorems we discovered in the process of writing that have not before appeared in print, and hundreds of examples."

I've written a fairly lengthy online review of this book for the Mathematical Association of America. The URL for this review is http://www.maa.org/press/maa-reviews/an-introduction-to-benfords-law.

A number of technical comments are found in my review. My only general comment is that the title is somewhat misleading in that there's very little of an introductory nature in this book. The prerequisite to get much out of this book is a fairly deep grounding in measure theory based probability theory. A thorough familiarity with Fourier analysis is required at some points, and ergodic theory is used at others. Hence, the book will be of greatest interest to graduate students in mathematics looking for a dissertation topic, and professional mathematicians looking for a one volume summary of what is now known about the mathematics of Benford's Law.
