About the Author
Syd Mead, born in St. Paul Minnesota, in 1933, graduated from the Art Center School of design in 1959 after serving 3 years in the US Army. Syd Mead was hired by the advanced auto design studio of Ford Motor Co. while still in school to create concept designs for the futuristic show cars the other designers would look to for inspiration. Syd left Ford Mo Co after only two years to begin working on his own for such clients as Raymond Loye, US Steel, Phillips, and eventually every major studio in Hollywood.

Why is this not currently in print?

At least as of this writing, it is not, and I cannot understand why this would be so. A copy of the book might be unpleasantly expensive, and it may cause tears when you sign the check. That won't matter, and you may not even notice you are reduced to little more than freeze dried ramen for a while. It is beautiful. (The book, not the ramen...)

Oversized volume, with artwork ranging from rough doodles and shape explorations in pencil, ink sketchwork and ZOMG beautiful finished paintings. Work covers automotive concept projects, a little of the "steel couture" series, studies and complete painted scenes from movie projects, interspersed with some of Mead's thinking on the process and result of his work on these various efforts.

I deeply respect Syd Mead as an industrial designer and conceptual artist. What he creates ignores boundaries imposed by the "culture of bland", the accountants insistence for beige blobs that resemble photoshopped potatoes, or worn bars of soap in cornflower blue, meant for users presumed incapable of tying their own shoelaces without risk of serious injury. The language of Mead's work is not for worlds ruled by Department of Health & Safety bureaucrats and cultural sensitivity lawyers, inhabited by mincing paedophile vampires or vacuous bottle-tanned New Jersey beachrats, and the iPod cult(ure) could not have found traction here. There are edges, solidity, in what he creates; sleek objects that have never been made and yet you feel as though you ought to be able to find one at the spinner dealership on the corner, or watch homecoming celebrations on CNN for the intrepid expeditionary spaceship having finally returned to Earth orbit from the long trip out to Jupiter. The design language in OBLAGON is that the user is competent, of a tomorrow waiting only for you to grab the very analog keys to the car and GO.

Phenomenal views of future possibilities!

I recently got this book, and absolutely loved it. If you're of a futurist bent, and thirst for views of how things *might* be, then this is a book for you.
The illustrations are lavish, and the explanations of the design concepts behind the art give you a better idea of some of the planning that has gone into the picture, as well as possible avenues for future construction technologies.
I'm hooked. I have another book on order, and am saving up for other books of his. (He also has a mailing list. I got details in a flyer tucked into my copy of this book...)

Syd Mead sometimes calls himself a "futureist" and his credits in the sci-fi classic Blade Runner read "Visual Specialist". This is an amazing collection of Syd Mead's visual art of the future and is not only beautiful to look at but is an intelligent view of future machinary and cuture.

The outcome of these studies may be used to formulate strategies for clinical care of future patients. If the results are positive, community hospitals may undergo changes even more exten sive than those required when they established coronary care units. If the inter ventions are not proven to provide significant advantages over the course of nature, the current concepts of coronary care may be retained. However, such conclusions will be only as valid as the techniques used to measure infarct size.

A remarquable insight into a new planetary archetype... and much more !

Wow ! It's the first word that comes to mouth, when discovering this marvel of a book.
I had already much enjoyed "The Archetypal Cosmos", by the same author.
This time, Keiron Le Grice guides us into the discovery of a new dwarf planet (like Pluto), Eris, goddess of strife, feud and discord.
His book his both amazingly clear and extremely rich : KLG taps into mythology, astrology, philosophy and much more, to write a book of a unique depth and scope, that goes much further than just shedding light on a new planet, or explaining what the astrological significance of this planet might be.
This book is an absolute MUST READ for any astrologer, on the one hand, but also for many people interested in archetypes, in mythology, or - more generally speaking - in better understanding mankind, our present collective predicament and what we might learn from the stars.
I can't recommend it enough !
Were I to write this comment in my mother tongue (French), I would go much greater length to explain in details all you can expect to find in these pages, but I do hope that these few lines will be enough to trigger other readers' interest.

Eerie archetypes

Keiron Le Grice is a collegue of Richard Tarnas within the field of "archetypal cosmology", a fusion of modern astrology, transpersonal psychology and Jungianism. "Discovering Eris" is a book speculating about the possible astrological/psychological meaning of Eris, a newly discovered "dwarf planet" and "Plutoid" beyond the orbit of Pluto.

Le Grice reaches the conclusion that Eris (named after the Greek goddess of strife) represent Heraclitean strife and conflict between opposites, something the author regards as the fundamental fact of existence and the ultimate driving force behind evolution. Eris was discovered shortly after terrorism (in the form of 9/11) and climate change became widely recognized problems, both being examples of strife threatening our civilization (itself the result of strife between Nature and Man), and hence calling out for a resolution...or else! Note that the author regards climate change as strife caused by Mother Nature, apparently a kind of semi-conscious "revenge of Gaia".Thus, Eris is both a harbinger of death and destruction, and a challenge to humanity to mend its ways, and hence turn strife into a force for higher good. The Eris archetype also works on the level of the individual, as both the ultimate ground of personal evolution and the ultimate goal of individuation on a higher level.

While Le Grice is pretty "esoteric" compared to your friendly neighborhood astrologer, he also makes a couple of nods in that direction. In astrology, every zodiac sign has a planetary ruler. Where does Eris fit? The most obvious choice would be Scorpio, but that sign is already occupied by Pluto (and, traditionally, Mars). Eventually, Le Grice assigns Eris to Libra, but only at the expense of reinterpreting the friendly, lovely nature of Librans to something more depressive! He also analyzes the horoscopes of Nietzsche, William Blake and Alan Watts, taking Eris into consideration.

While the book is interesting and very well written, I admit that I don't buy the author's Jungian-derived perspective where evil is simply a necessary opposite of good, and both has to be "integrated" for "individuation" to happen. But perhaps that's how far we can get, if we don't look beyond Eris to something even greater... ;-)

It is a little "old school" in that it features illustration rather than photos but the illustrations are both clear and accurate. I have been to a few of these places and can say that nothing suffers because there are illustrations. this textbook is pretty helpful but I think it helps alot to have ...

Recently started taking Japanese classes again.. this textbook is pretty helpful but I think it helps alot to have a teacher guide you through it and give supporting documents. In general though, they do a good job of providing pretty interesting dialog for each chapter. A lot more relatable than my old Japanese textbooks. There was one that comes in mind about a mom nagging the step sister about studying more and getting into a good school and lamenting over the fact that she came from a 'bimbo' (poor) family so she wanted to give her daughter more opportunities in life. Seriously.

Simple and Easy

I went through classes using the Nakama series for a year and half, and find that those textbooks were thick and expensive, however gave super in depth explanations as well as alternative uses of grammar. When I compare Nakama to Genki; I like Genki for its price, and explanations of the grammar. The explanations of Genki are short, but to the point (similar to "Japanese Sentences Patterns for Effective Communication"). It includes a fair amount of Kanji and vocabulary. Actually Genki includes grammar points omitted from Nakama and vice versa. One particular part I enjoyed were the short readings in the appendices.

I used this book at my local Japan America Society for 10 weeks, and when used with a good sensei can be just as effective as Nakama. Textbooks like Genki (and Nakama) are best used in the classroom setting because ultimately there will be gaps in what the textbook provides and what your initial logic (based on your native language) will attempt to tell you. However I think Nakama is better overall for the amount of Kanji, its explanations, and because Nakama 2 will propel the beginner far into the intermediate level somewhere around chapter 8 or 9. If you are considering buying this for self study I would advise against doing so.

This book is for beginners. Although it seems that some classes pass off the material as intermediate, it truly is beginner. Only once I finished Genki and moved onto "An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese" (which is the same series) would I consider an advance to an intermediate level. Hence the recommendation.

For me, this textbook makes great use as a reference because I need to double check things every now and then.

Great Japanese Language Text

I began studying Japanese language with the orange Genki book, four semesters ago. I find this the best text on the market. I am now entering my 5th semester and ready to take on the green book.

The book is laid out in an easy to follow style beginning with a dialogue, new vocabulary, and grammar points. In the last half of the chapter there are drills that help you with each grammar point. In the back there are kanji drills and other useful language phrases and situational tips. The text is clear and easy to follow. This is a comprehensive language course.

I highly recommend this text.

Let's Begin Again, Can You Tell Me What Yields a Life Worth Living or What the Gods Want or Who Deserves Power

Many times, at the end of a long, exhausting, and humiliating elentic examination, where no answer has been found, Socrates proposes, "Let's begin again." Whereupon his interlocutor remembers he has pressing business elsewhere.

Socrates believes Athenians should be ashamed they care so much for money, reputation, and glory and so little for virtue and justice. For this reason when Socrates meets someone who says he does care for the most important things, Socrates will not let him go, but examines him. And if, at the end, he is found not to possess virtue, (it should be noted that elentic examination is designed specifically to produce this outcome, to produce aporia), Socrates reproaches him. (Ap 29-30)

Socrates adds that the god has ordered him to do this. (Ap 30, 33) How does Socrates know this was the voice (sign) of god? He does not. All he can do is use his critical reason to interpret the utterances to extract whatever truth is in them. It is obvious that Socrates did believe in a supernatural world which coexists somehow with the normal world. But ultimately he placed his trust in reason, not in the voice of the god.

In fact, Socrates remade the gods in the image of reason. These gods do not quarrel, deceive, or lie as do the gods of traditional Greek religion. No, Socrates' gods are perfectly good. As Plato wrote, "and surely nothing good can be harmful...And what does not harm does no evil...And what does no evil could not be the cause of any evil...And is not the good beneficent...Hence the cause of well-being...So god cannot be the cause of all things, but only good things; of evil things he is not the cause." (Republic 379)

Socrates interpreted the signs of the god as underwriting his elentic activity. Apollo wants people to try to be virtuous and to realize that they do not know what it is to be virtuous. That is, Socrates' divinity is criticizing the values of the Athenian community and ordering them to live differently, to care more for virtue and justice. This was to many Athenians, to say the least, irrating and, to say the most, smacked of impiety.

All the while the Peloponnesian war raged and Athens was extracting terrible retribution from cities like Scione, Torone, and Melos, Socrates kept saying, "it is better to suffer injustice than commit it." Socrates wanted to break the cycle of revenge and retaliation, to waken men from their love of honor and glory which he perceived as turning the world into the nightmare of war and stasis. Injustice is a disease of the soul and life with a sick and corrupted soul was not a life worth living. (Crito 47)

Plato saw Socrates as man fully awake, for which he gave him the title of the wisest, justest, and best. But such ideas of non-retaliation ran counter to traditional Greek notions and gave most Athenians, in contrast to Plato, heartburn. The typical response had to be along the lines, "how could a man be so naive."

After 404 BCE and the traumas of losing the Peloponnesian war followed by the outbreak of civil war to throw out the Spartan installed Critias and the Thirty, who had quickly earned the name tyrants, a growing number began to consider that Socrates' way of thinking was polluting the city and corrupting traditional religion and Athenian democracy.

Charges were brought, Socrates was found guilty, sentenced to death and executed. Was the Athenian jury right or was Plato?

The best place to start with Socratic studies is Reeve's very readable Socrates in the Apology.
