The authors suggest that readers examine the Handbook and then apply the literary concepts to additional reading from today’s ever-expanding selection of children’s books.

 

This Ninth Edition includes some outstanding new features, among them:

 

·         Chapter 2, Issues and Fundamental Change in Children’s Literature , shares research on effects ofthe digital age on children’s books, ways children interact with wordless picturebooks, graphic and verse novels, blended genres and postmodern picturebooks.

About the Author

Rebecca J. Lukens graduated with honors from Concordia College in Minnesota, earned an M.A. from Syracuse University, and next worked on the editorial staff of a children's encyclopedia in New York.  After a year on the faculty of St. Olaf College followed by her marriage, she taught at New York State College, Albany, and later at Ohio University, Chillicothe. After publication of a few children's stories, Miami University Department of English hired Lukens to teach Children's Literature–not "Kiddy Lit"–as well as technical and expository writing.

 

The first edition of A Critical Handbook of Children's Literature was published by Scott Foresman in 1976, and A Critical Handbook of Literature for Young Adults by Harper Collins in 1994.  Lukens also co-edited a literature anthology, Woman: An Affirmation, published by D. C. Heath in 1979.  Her latest publication, It's Been Great, is a memoir dedicated "to my children and theirs."

 

Lukens's retirement teaching has been with Miami University's Institute for Learning in Retirement; her favorite class she called "Laughter for Health and Sanity."

 

Jacquelin J. Smith is a career educator whose experience spans grades 2—8 through pre-service teaching. Children’s Literature has been a passion throughout her career, from literacy learning to connections across the curriculum. She has shared many cross-curricular teaching and learning strategies for science, social studies and math with children’s books at numerous professional conferences and in publications with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. A lifelong learner and Children’s Literature instructor at the University of Northern Iowa, her studies continually confirm both her appreciation for and belief in the power of critically examining children’s literature.

 

Cynthia Miller Coffel is the author of Thinking Themselves Free: Research on the Literacy of Teen Mothers. Her research in children's and young adult literature has appeared in journals such as The ALAN Review, Reader, and QSE. Her work won the Jeffrey E. Smith award for nonfiction from The Missouri Review in 2007, and her literary essays have twice been listed among the notable essays of the year in The Best American Essays series. Her PhD in literacy education is from the University of Iowa.

A Critical Handbook of Children's Literature is a fantastic resource book for teachers. It really explains all the parts of literature- plot, theme, character analysis, etc to help teach literature to students. It is also a great book for anyone studying children's literature. I highly recommend this resource book!

The end all of children's lit apparently. Great for use as a textbook (which is the reason I bought it), but sometimes I got frustrated with how overly simple the book was. Fantastic resource though and definitely a keeper even after the class ended for the semester.

Dr. Julie Knapp, Ph.D., BCBA-D is a Pediatric Neuropsychologist and Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctorate. She is Executive Director of the Knapp Center for Childhood Development located in Boardman, OH, which specializes in the diagnosis, neuropsychological assessment and treatment of children with autism spectrum disorders. Dr. Knapp offers an International ABA Program assisting families from other parts of the world to travel to the US for ABA therapy. She offers remote training and supervision on ABA programs through a HIPPA secure website to families across the world who otherwise cannot find local ABA therapy or who wants expert advice on their program. Dr. Knapp is also a Consultant at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital and holds an appointment at Case Western Reserve University. Carolline Turnbull, BA, BCaBA is a Board Certified Associate Behavior Analyst at KidsLink Neurobehavioral Center in Twinsburg, OH. Carolline is a behavior consultant for home and school based consultation and developed a dance class for children ages 3–6 with varying disabilities and their neurotypical peers. She completed her Bachelor's degree in speech pathology and audiology at Kent State University and her course work for her BCaBA at Florida Institute of Technology. Essential for the historian

This book is an unofficial history from 1949 to 1989 of ASIS - the Australian Secret Intelligence Service - also known by its code name of MO9. The authors are experienced investigative journalists but not sensationalists; this is a very sober account. They had (unauthorised) access to the secret evidence and findings of the Royal Commission into the intelligence services of Justice Hope and to the secret history of ASIS prepared for the Royal Commission as well as numerous interviews with past and serving ASIS staff. When they learned of plans to publish the book the government of the day obtained an injunction against the authors and the book was only allowed to be published after numerous sections that related to operational matters were removed.

What remains is a history of ASIS in chronological order from its foundation to 1989, with all major operations explained and numerous insights into its activities. This is a valuable book because although today ASIS openly advertises for staff and has its own web page it is still a very secretive organisation, even more so in the past when even newly elected prime ministers did not know of its existence until they took office.

One discovery is how few friends ASIS had in government at all levels. Only one prime minister had any use for it. Menzies ignored it except to sack its first director, Holt was initially enthusiastic but later went cool towards it, Gorton thought the intelligence it gathered was trivial, McMahon described its product as "bar room gossip" and sacked its director, Whitlam thought it was out of control and sacked the director, Fraser was enthusiastic but put the broom through, Hawke thought it a waste of time but cynically kept it operating to show the US government that Australia was a loyal ally. More importantly Sir Arthur Tange as head of the public service was an implacable enemy. It did not help that some of ASIS' directors were distinctly eccentric.

Most political and economic intelligence is collected by diplomats in the normal course of their activities, Defence has a good network of military attaches and the Defence Signals Directorate produces world class sigint. Business people and academics also contribute material. Compared with these, ASIS' contributions are quite small.

There were some successes - a series of good networks in Cambodia and finding KGB penetration of Indonesia's BAKIN, but there have been significant failures to predict important regional events including the expulsion of Singapore from Malaysia and Siteveni Rabuka's Fiji coup.

All three directors who were sacked were accused of insubordination and exceeding their authority, usually by running operations that were not approved and indeed were contrary to government policy. There are numerous examples of this. When Sihanouk expelled the CIA from Cambodia, ASIS took over CIA networks, but Australia policy was to support Sihanouk while US policy was to undermine him (and when he was overthrown his incompetent successors were themselves overthrown by the Khmer Rouge). In Chile Australia supported the Allende government and opposed Pinochet's coup but ASIS passed on the names of pro-democracy dissidents to the CIA. At one stage ASIS supported the OPM guerrillas in West Papua - no matter how noble the cause this was still against government policy.

The authors question why ASIS still trains officers in "special operations" when, unlike the CIA, it does not engage in paramilitary activity or assassinations. They suggest that this type of action is best left to the SAS and give some examples of ludicrous training incidents that posed a real threat to the public.

Some questions they raise may never be answered. Was Dick Ellis, who MI6 sent to oversee the establishment of ASIS, a Soviet agent? He had certainly been turned by the Nazis and within the British intelligence establishment was widely suspected of treason. How close are ASIS agents to organised crime, especially given that it has the responsibility of collecting intelligence on transnational crime? How divided were ASIS officers' loyalties, when they referred to ASIS HQ as "main office" and MI6 HQ as "head office"? This was a period when Britain turned to Europe and dumped its "East of Suez" responsibilities and connections. Is ASIS still a stronghold of monarchists and Anglophiles? Were they in touch with mainstream political thought in Australia given that so many officers were members of the Melbourne Club and other bastions of Establishment privilege?

How To Be A Viking And Have Good Tales To Tell

Along the lines of 'How To Be A Gladiator', 'Viking The Norse Warrior's Manual' is an interesting, informative and entertaining look at how one may aspire to the ranks of the Viking warrior and come home loaded with gold and other goodies. The book covers the different ranks of a warrior, weaponry, some famous Vikings of legend and just how far the warriors actually spread. The book is informative and entertaining, the only minor flaw is that compared to the 'Gladiator' and 'Legionnaire's' books, the book is lacking somewhat in the way of information and as an e-book, the formatting while reading can be a little off-setting. If you wish to be a Viking and come home loaded with gold, add this book to your collection and start working on your swordwork.

I'm a military historian, and this book had a fact or two for even a big viking age buff like myself. I'm a huge fan of the series; while not as well written as the Unofficial Guide on Roman Legionaries it's probably the most informative book in the series.

This book is one book in a series about various warrior types. It's entertaining, but has accurate historical information as well. I would recommend this for students in middle school or above, or for curious adults. It will give you a window into an ancient culture and give you a brush up on history that won't put you to sleep.

Announcing a New SeriesThe aim of Annotating Art's Histories is to produce a wide-ranging historical understanding of cross-cultural interaction in the visual arts. The books in the series will build upon the interdisciplinary insights of visual studies and post-colonial studies, examining the works of non-Western artists and artists from minority backgrounds alongside Western art movements of the twentieth century. The goal is to develop knowledge of the dynamic interplay of cultural differences and modern art and to encourage the integration of cultural diversity into the study of art history.

About the Author

Kobena Mercer is a writer and critic living in London. He is the editor of Pop Art and Vernacular Cultures, Cosmopolitan Modernisms, and Discrepant Abstraction (all published by The MIT Press and inIVA), author of Welcome to the Jungle: New Positions in Black Cultural Studies, and an inaugural recipient of the Clark Prize for Excellence in Arts Writing, presented by the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute.

An Insightful Look at One Artist's Enuring Contribution

Kobena Mercer has long been a strong presence in the ongoing debate and discourse around issues of race and representation in the practice of artists of color. Much of his work has focused on the postmodern moment. With this important book Mercer now brings his incisive intelligence to bear on one of the premier African American modernists, Romare Bearden. It is no surprise that Mercer has brought the same high level of intellectual acuity and observation to Bearden's work, casting him in a new and exciting light. Mercer is joined here by a host of other art historians and theorists, each taking a moment out from the continuing din of Postmodernism to reflect on how we might bring a seemingly moderninst artist into the current discussion. In doing so they rescue Bearden from the dustbin of history, and make him once again an artist worthy of continued--and renewed--attention.

This book is an important and valuable addition to the ongong discourse around the place of African American artists within both the modernist and postmodern canon. That this work was undertaken by Mercer--with his impeccable Postmodernist pedigree--makes it that much more impressive.

Since turning professional in 1992, O'Sullivan has clocked up an incredible number of awards and trophies, including the UK Championship, the China Open, the Regal Championships, the Benson and Hedges Masters and the British Open. In January 2000 O'Sullivan won the Nations Cup for England, boasting the best record of any player, 13 wins from 15 frames played.

A must for anyone that follows British Snooker or Ronnie O'Sullivan

Interesting read for anyone following British Snooker. Ronnie O'Sullivan has been the bad boy of British Snooker for over 20 years. He has made more century breaks (100 points without a miss) in competition than any other player living or dead and holds the record for maximum breaks (perfect games of 147 points) in competition at 13. Ronnie is a complicated, intelligent and often troubled individual but yet comes across very likable. His second greatest love in life, other than his two adorable children, is running and the book is often more about his running addiction that snooker but snooker fans won't get a short shrift has he has plenty of detailed information about the inside story of professional snooker. I found the book a very enjoyable quick read, having been a snooker and Ronnie fan for several years. There is a wealth of high quality videos of Ronnie playing on YouTube including all his maximums, especially his fastest ever maximum of 5 minutes 20 seconds in 1997 when he was 21. A record that will likely never be matched or beaten. Ronnie doesn't leave anything out, the drugs, the temper tantrums, the depression are all here.

Tabloid rebuttal

This book talks about his running, which I didn't know he started as early as he did, but for the most part, but this book seems to be him wanting to clear the air regarding all the tabloid trash that has been talked about him the last several years. "Ronnie did this, Ronnie did that." So Ronnie writes this book to say "Well this is what really happened here, and here's what I was thinking there." It's interesting enough to fill in some gaps if you're the type who reads the papers. I am a Ronnie "fan", but I suppose the term should be "Talent appreciator". I didn't really gain any insights to greatness or glean any secret recipe to what makes a genuis rise above. Darn. I am at the point in life now where I am no longer interested in what my "heroes" do in their own time or in their own heads. If I like watching Ronnie, I'll watch him, if I like so and so's music, I'll listen to it. Beyond that, it's none of my business and just slows my life down trying to follow someone's life instead of living my own.

Snooker genius

Commentators are always saying that Ronnie O'Sullivan is the only snooker player who can be called a "genius" at the game. This book explains how and why he's so good, not from analyzing snooker play but from hearing about Ronnie himself - his background, his parents, running races as a positive addiction, his personality, and his transformation from self-doubting player with flashes of genius into a man who understands the "chimp" (the emotional side of his mind) and uses rational thought to change the way he reacts to situations. There are gem chapters throughout, such as the one about his self-imposed exile doing volunteer work on a farm. It's really a story of the importance of three Ronnies and their relationships - the snooker genius, his dad, and his son.
