About the Author

Michael J. Kavanagh is currently Professor Emeritus of Management at the  University at Albany, State University of New York. He also serves on the faculty of the Lorange School of Business Administration, Zurich, Switzerland. He is past editor of Group & Organization Management and a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and the Eastern Academy of Management. He has been involved in the HRIS field since 1982. He established the HRIS MBA program at the University at Albany in 1984 and has taught numerous courses in the field of HRIS. In 2006, he received the Award for Career Excellence from the International Association for Human Resource Information Management (IHRIM). He received his PhD in I/O psychology from Iowa State University in 1969.

Mohan Thite is an associate professor at Griffith Business School, Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia. He has more than 25 years’ experience as an HR professional, both in industry and in academia. He is the Editor-in-Chief of South Asian Journal of HRM (SAJHRM), published from Sage. He is a fellow of the Australian Human Resources Institute. He has been teaching HRIS for several years. His research & publications cover a broad range of management areas, including strategic HRM & knowledge management, e-HRM/HRIS, HR in Indian BPO, multinationals from emerging economies, HRM in Asia, global mobility of talent  and global services offshoring. He has published 3 books & over 50 book chapters and articles in international journals such as Human Resource Management (USA), Work, Employment, and Society, the International Journal of HRM, and the International Journal of Project Management.

Richard D. Johnson is an associate professor of management at the University at Albany, State University of New York. His research interests are human resource information systems (HRIS), the psychological and sociological impacts of computing, computer self-efficacy, e-learning, and issues surrounding the digital divide. He has published over 40 academic and practitioner articles in journals such as Information Systems Research, Human Resource Management Review, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, and the International Journal of Human Computer Studies. He serves on the editorial boards of AIS Transactions on Human-Computer Interaction and The Data Base for Advances in Information Systems. He is a certified Human Resource Information Professional and is co-Director of the University at Albany’s nationally recognized MBA HRIS program. Informative and helpful book. Gave me a lot of lingo for interviews, etc. that I missed when working with HR systems at the ground level. For anyone interested in being able to better relate with HR VP's and other executives, I think this book would be very helpful.

How to use workforce differentiation to achieve significant and verifiable strategic impact

Brian Becker, Mark Huselid, and Richard Beatty shares their thoughts about how to solve the various strategic challenges that line managers now face. "Specifically, it is about making senior managers more successful at executing their strategy" by putting strategy, not people, first. "For most organizations, that success has an important talent dimension. When it comes to workforce strategy, our approach requires that line managers define success but that HR professionals deliver the solution. This requires a new perspective on workforce strategy for both." That said, the transformation they recommend requires thinking more broadly (perhaps even counter intuitively) about the respective roles of line managers, HR, and the workforce because all of them must be centrally in any change initiatives.

With regard to this book's title, Becker, Huselid, and Beatty explain that "there are four key domains that distinguish a differentiated approach from a more conventional (undifferentiated) approach to workforce management: a focus on equity instead of equality; a focus on engaging the right employees, not necessarily all employees; an emphasis on hiring choice employees, not becoming an employer of choice; and finally, a focus on earned increases (i.e. increased responsibilities and compensation." More specifically, strategic talent becomes a competitive advantage (equity), those with strategic talent fully understand how to acquire and retain customers as well as how to accelerate improvement of organizational performance (employee focus); strategic talent is retained and helps to attract and hire fewer but much better-qualified job candidates (employee of choice); and peak performers are generously (and appropriately) rewarded and remain whereas poor/mediocre performers are not rewarded and asked to vacate their strategic roles.

There at least two major reasons why workforce differentiation is so important to almost all organizations, whatever their size or nature may be. First, it can help them to achieve significant and verifiable strategic impact in their competitive marketplace. Also, it will address one of the greatest challenges now facing their senior-managers: How to get more workers positively and constructively engaged? Recent Gallup research indicates that only 29% of the U.S. workforce is positively engaged (i.e. loyal, enthusiastic, and productive) whereas 55% is passively disengaged. That is, they are going through the motions, doing only what they must, "mailing it in," coasting, etc. What about the other 16%? They are "actively disengaged" in that they are doing whatever they can to undermine their employer's efforts to succeed.

In their book, Becker, Huselid, and Beatty provide a cohesive, comprehensive, and cost-effective program by which achieve these two very important objectives, achieving significant and verifiable strategic impact in the competitive marketplace, and increasing the positive and productive engagement of workers at all levels and in all areas of operations. More specifically, they explain

1. How to put strategy, not people, first

2. How to link strategic capabilities to workforce strategy

3. How to identify and evaluate strategic positions

4. How to establish leadership accountability for workforce success (e.g. the line manager's HR role)

5. How to design architecture for the differentiated workforce

6. How to develop and apply strategic workforce measures

My repetition of the word "how" is deliberate because Becker, Huselid, and Beatty devote most of their time and attention to explaining how to implement their various recommendations. They are diehard pragmatists, with an insatiable curiosity to know what works, what doesn't, and why. Their determination to focus on real-world issues, problems, and solutions is perhaps best illustrated by the detailed and surprisingly lively case study they provide in Chapter 7 (Pages 171-231) of how th4 American Hat Association created a differentiated workforce. Obviously, it would be a fool's errand to attempt to duplicate those initiatives without appropriate modification in another organization, even one in the healthcare field. It would also be a fool's mistake to ignore the lessons to be learned from this case study.

Great questions, wrong answers

Becker, Huselid and Beatty have come up with some really important challenges to existing practice in talent management. I'd suggest that all HR professionals should consider these challenges themselves, and then develop their own responses.

I don't personally agree with all the solutions that the authors themselves propose ([...] but I think they've done a great service for HR in proposing them as they're hopefully going to provoke some deeper thinking than we often see in this profession.

Open a new vision to Talents for any enterprise

Brian Becker, Mark Huselid, and Richard Beatty, gave me a new idea to think of how to use new eyeside to organization talent. Ex, in organizational practice, sometimes it isn't easy to differentiate the equity and equality, especal on the sensetive compensation and benefit policy, so we often design the equality policy to satisfy each employee.
However, as authors reminds, for stategic execution purpose, we needs to optimize the bigest effective success, and that's why we should build up the environment, policy for talent working productively.
As a HR manager, i still believe it's a challendge to follow in practice. But this book it's still valuable for me to think more aspects for reference to design appropriate methods to attract talents.

The Best Text for Introductory Semiconductor Devices

Robert Pierret has, arguably, written the best introductory textbook for learning about semiconductor devices. His book grinds out and explains many of the details that a first-timer should learn. In a sense, he holds your hand through the material and does a very good job of it.

Things I liked a lot:
1) Coverage of the basic physics and equations that model carrier statistics and transport. Use of the equations of state in several different scenarios.
2) Explanation of carrier flow in a p-n junction.
3) Derivation of BJT current equations.
4) Discussion of modern MOSFET effects.
5) Figures used for explanations.
6) Use of computational methods for calculations.
7) Creative end-of-chapter problems (but no solutions!)

Things that should be added:
1) List of equations and material properties in localized areas (this is a biggie, but you can always find them online and make your own!)
2) Better explanation of BJT operation.
3) Discussion of interesting devices (not that MOSFETs and BJTs aren't!).
4) More about processing and fabrication

This is perfect for an introductory book for undergraduates. For more advanced readings, I would consult Streetman or Sze. Streetman addresses the lacking elements of this text. Streetman also has a guided learning section at the end of each chapter with answers to conceptual problems. Pierret, instead, has mostly worked calculation problems scattered throughout the chapters.

A gem about FUNDAMENTALS

This textbook is excellent, it is the basic, number one point of starting the journey into the device world. Clear, concise, written as it shuold be done.

To someone this book will seem to be very simple, not enough details coverd and not many devices like SET or SOI.

To other people this textbook will seem to be extremely difficult, impossible to read, confusing, full of theories that cannot be understood. Somebody even wrote here that you will need a PhD in order to read and learn from this book.

Well, if a PhD is needed for reading this book then we humans probably are less intelligent than a cockroach and the term SEMICONDUCTORS would be used maybe for unknown powerful GODS with unimaginable powers that to us, humans, would never be revealed.(and don't even think to ever understand MOSFETs or BJTs, since they are strange magical structures created by GODS, full of obscure mysteries)

I have no words guys, where the hell we can find things done more simply than this.

When someone see that it dates back to 1996, probably it will say , why the hell i'm going to buy an old book from the "past millenium". Its true, after 13 years or relentless progress, in 2009 semiconductor devices have entered in the nanoelectronics era and maybe a more recent texbook is the right choice. Rest assured that in 13 years many changes occurred, but what remains unchanged are the FUNDAMENTALS. This is a book about FUNDAMENTALS, and they will be with us forever. Progress is visible in applications, or better technologies and better understanding of the fundamentals. Fundamental Principles remain the same.
Quantum Mechanics is more than a century old science, but this does not mean that its too old now to be used in the "modern era" of computers, ipod or such other devices. What are we experiencing today is the vital applications of the quantum theories of a century ago. Nothing will change even in the future about Energy Bands, Solid state devices in 2050 will still be explained using energy bands. The Bloch theory on Energy Bands will remain the same, energy quantization is the same as it was experinced by Planck a century ago and so will remain. Maybe 200 years from now we will use light instead of electrons and photonics will become prevalent over electronics, but the fundamentals, such as diffraction will be with us forever.
So think again if you consider this book too old.

Excellent writing style, efficent text layout, and the most important it stresses on energy bands of devices. There is no way to fully understand solid state structures if you cannot draw energy bands.
Excellent text overall, only that it costs a lot, too expensive, more affordable prices are needed for fundamentals books like this

Better than Sze

I know a lot of classes are taught using the Solid State "bible" by S.M.Sze. Pierret far outperforms Sze in terms of presenting an introductory text on the subject matter. I've tutored several people in classes using Sze's book, and every time I've used Pierret who has much more intuitive descriptions of the physics taking place. In the major sections in the book, he has a thorough qualatative description of the device/process before plunging into the quantatative equations. Even then, he is very clear and concise. The problems relate directly to the information presented in the chapter (unlike Sze, who several times uses terminology or assumptions in the problems never mentioned in the body of the text). While not perfect, I strongly recommend this book for ANYONE needing an introduction to the physics behind semiconductor devices, and I strongly urge any instructors to use this book instead of Sze's Semiconductor Devices book.

A contextual account is adopted for the satisfaction of curiosity. It then discusses the conditions of successful reference to the object of curiosity and its presuppositions. The book concludes with a discussion on the limits of curiosity and its satisfaction.

Odd as it may be, curiosity, which deserves to be a central theme in philosophy, has been neglected for so long only to be remembered by a few scant remarks in the history of philosophy. Considering this neglect, Philosophy of Curiosity is without precedent in addressing the subject in a comprehensive manner. It will leave the ones who want to work in this area with a jump start as well as igniting curiosity about the subject for newcomers. It is an original, thought-provoking, and enlightening work that will push readers to think about less visited dimensions of curiosity. Determined to uncover the true roots of Italian cuisine and reveal its intriguing yet uncelebrated past, food historian Karima Moyer-Nocchi interviewed Italian "ninetysomething" women from various walks of life, from charcoal-makers to countesses. Her travels spanned from the far north to the deep south, as well as Italy's former landholdings. All of the interviewees had lived through the harrowing years called the Ventennio fascista, the twenty-year reign of fascism in Italy, and were eager to have their final say.

About the Author

A professor in the modern languages department at the University of Siena in Tuscany, Italy, Karima Moyer-Nocchi has made Italy her home for over twenty-five years. As an enthusiastic food historian, she travels extensively through Italy studying the social, economic, and cultural factors that characterize cuisine in each region of the country. She is a frequent lecturer in Food Studies both in Italy and abroad.

The author presently resides in Città di Castello, Umbria, with her husband.

An insider look

I have to start by saying that one of the woman featured in this book is my great-aunt. I met the author when she came to do her interview. There were many of us in the family who had come to hear my aunt talk about her life during the fascist era. We too were curious to hear her story. The author told us that this often happened when she went to do an interview, that the family members finally managed to take the time to listen to this family elder talk about her experiences. What I wanted to point out in particular in this review is how skillfully the author rendered the interview into the English narration. She really captured the personality of my aunt and I can hear her clearly through the translation. I think the work that Moyer-Nocchi is doing is so very important because we don’t take the time to listen to our elders, and the valuable insight they bring will be lost if no one bothers to go to the time and effort of valorizing and recording their experiences. It is not just about ignoring old people because we are too busy, we ignore that period of time in our past. We just don’t want to know, particularly about people like my aunt, who unfortunately was not contrary to the regime. But her perspective too is part of the collective, and she adds her viewpoint to the overall picture. If you want to get a slice of life picture of Italy’s past that you are not going to get anywhere else or in any other way, this is the book for you.

A refreshing approach!

A new and previously-unthought-of perspective on Italian history under Fascism. The author has a great writing style and a brand new idea for understanding not only the Italian farm family's plight under Il Duce, but the migration of the poverty-stricken rural majority to the cities in search of better living conditions.

I really enjoyed reading the interviews with these venerable, strong women. I was amazed at their ability to survive as the last in each family to get any kind of nutrition. Not only were they strong, but they also showed great intelligence and perseverance in finding jobs in the face of depressed employment opportunities and indifference to the needs of females in general.

Each interview includes a favorite recipe truly indicative of the inventiveness of these women despite the desperate lack of resources. Most of them pooh-poohed the idea that these were actual recipes. Many of them were adamant that they just "cooked". The author includes an intermezzo after each interview expanding on what the interviewee said with facts about the time period and the laws and societal rules in that region at that time.

Read this book. You will enjoy it!

And it is this which so fascinates in Karima Moyer-Nocchi's admirable work. The main focus of this thesis is the implementation of a bone remodeling algorithm in MATLAB and ANSYS on the basis of FEM. The strain energy density is used as mechanical stimulus. The cortical and trabecular bone are described as continuous materials with variable density. This thesis can be divided into four main parts. The first part is due to the material properties of cortical and trabecular bone. The second part is about the remodeling theory and gives an historical review of the developed numerical approaches up to now. The implementation of the remodeling algorithm in ANSYS and MATLAB as well as its validation is topic of part three. In last main part, the algorithm is applied to a 2D FE-model of a human proximal femur.

Irrisistabley delicious!

GiGi Barnes never knew her mama. All she has are the recipes mama kept and her sister DidDi makes to keep Mama's memory alive. GiGi was raised by DiDi. After winning a lottery, they move from a quiet town in North Carolina to a ritzy town in NY so GiGi can get a great education. This is the "Recipe for Success" they planned. At first GiGi hates leaving the only home she's ever known. As she begins to make friends, she breaks away from DiDi's tight hold and forges her own success plan. Soon she begins to learn more about herself and the mama she never knew.
This is a delightful and heartwarming story of love, loss, sacrifice, and what it means to be a family. GiGi's voice is pitch perfect 'tween, as are those of her classmates. The easy to follow recipes at the end of most chapters are a charming and unique addition. They bring out "mama's character in a way straightforward prose wouldn't. This is a book middle grade kids will enjoy. Try the impossible coconut pie...impossibly delicious!

A beautiful book about family, fresh starts... and pie!

I picked up this book expecting a sweet middle grade story -- I got just that, and SO much more. The Truth About Twinkie Pie tells GiGi's story as she sets about reinventing herself after a sudden financial windfall allows her to move with her sister DiDi from their SC trailer park to the Gold Coast of NY. Suddenly, GiGi gets to be the new girl in town -- with a whole new life and story of her own making. But Twinkie Pie isn't just about GiGi's attempts to find herself and fit in at a new school -- there are secrets, first crushes, and ultimately, a mystery to solve. Oh, and recipes. Lots of recipes! I would have completely devoured (pun intended ;) this book as a middle-grade reader... And made the Twinkie Pie, of course. Highly recommended!

This is one of the best chapter books I've read in a long time

As an elementary school library coordinator, I've read a lot of middle grade novels, also reviewing this genre for SLJ. This is one of the best chapter books I've read in a long time. There's lots of juicy ingredients: poor, brainy, southern trailer-living girl transfers to posh NY private school; befriends cutest guy at school but immediately makes mortal enemies with one of the rich, cool girls; mom supposedly dead, but is she? Add in spicy, flavorful dialogue and a smart-talking hairdresser sister which all equals an incredibly enjoyable read. Highly recommended!

Richard H. Thaler is a professor of behavioral science and economics at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business and, in 2015, the president of the American Economic Association. He lives in Chicago.

Cass R. Sunstein is the Robert Walmsley University Professor at Harvard, where he is founder and director of the Program on Behavioral Economics and Public Policy. He is the most cited law professor in the United States and probably the world. He has served as Administrator of the White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs and as a member of the President s Review Group on Intelligence and Communications Technologies. His many books include the bestseller Nudge: Improving Decisions about Health, Wealth, and Happiness (with Richard H. Thaler), Simpler: The Future of Government, and Republic.com. A frequent adviser to governments all over the world and a columnist for Bloomberg View, he is married to the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power.
