About the Author

Daniel B. McLaughlin is the director of the Center for Health and Medical Affairs in the Opus College of Business at the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, Minnesota. Previously, he was the executive director of the National Institute of Health Policy at St. Thomas, the CEO of Hennepin County Medical Center, and the director of a county health system. Mr. McLaughlin has served as chair of the National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems and has served on the boards of other regional and national associations. In 1993, he served on President Clinton s Task Force on Health Care Reform.

John R. Olson, PhD, is a professor at the University of St. Thomas in the Operations and Supply Chain Department. He has published numerous studies related to quality management and healthcare systems. Over the past 10 years he has consulted with many healthcare organizations on their strategic planning process, metric setting, and the implementation of quality and continuous improvement programs. He is a master Black Belt in Six Sigma and Lean Sensei.

It's okay

There's a fair amount of unnecessary junk in this book. There's almost an entire page describing the history of the philosophical nature of knowledge. Occasionally the writing will slide into mush-mouthed business jargon. The book itself is mostly generic supply chain information, with sprinkles of healthcare information. This makes it good for medical people with no operations backgrounds, but very redundant for SCM people with no healthcare background.
Overall it's okay, but it could be better.

A very well thought out book.
Well organized, can be read in sequence or jumping to individual chapters.
Most importantly, each area has links to examples and resources that complement the information in the book.

Topics are reviewed clearly but succinctly. There are very good references,but just enough.
This book serves as a very good introduction for a starting to mid level student of the field.
It could be used for a more complex program, the key is the complexity of the applications, but the approach and
organization and tools it reviews are essentially the same.

The early to mid chapters are more basic and foundational.
the last third is more advanced and leads to putting it all togetner.

A very good book with excellent resources that amplify and expand topics, tools, and procedures.

Easy to read, with multiple clear diagrams.

Fun Book to read!

John Daly is the epitome of the everyman golfer, yet has such style and flair and charisma that naturally draws fans and fellow pga professionals to him. Daly gives great advice in this book which covers the fundamentals as well as some personal observations from the long knocker himself. I own his two most recent books, but wanted this one to add to my collection. He was gracious enough to sign them all for me and I display them proudly in my office. If you're a Daly fan, this book is a must have. If you want some good swing advice and learn a couple things you just might not have thought about, pick this up and develop a sweeter swing in no time.

About the Author
Laura Sebastian-Coleman, a data quality architect at Optum Insight, has worked on data quality in large health care data warehouses since 2003. Optum Insight specializes in improving the performance of the health system by providing analytics, technology and consulting services. Laura has implemented data quality metrics and reporting, launched and facilitated Optum Insight’s Data Quality Community, contributed to data consumer training programs, and has led efforts to establish data standards and manage metadata. In 2009, she led a group of analysts from Optum and UnitedHealth Group in developing the original Data Quality Assessment Framework (DQAF) which is the basis for Measuring Data Quality for Ongoing Improvement.

An active professional, Laura has delivered papers at MIT’s Information Quality Conferences and at conferences sponsored by the International Association for Information and Data Quality (IAIDQ) and the Data Governance Organization (DGO). From 2009-2010, she served as IAIDQ’s Director of Member Services.

Before joining Optum Insight, she spent eight years in internal communications and information technology roles in the commercial insurance industry. She holds the IQCP (Information Quality Certified Professional) designation from IAIDQ, a Certificate in Information Quality from MIT, a B.A. in English and History from Franklin & Marshall College, and Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Rochester (NY).

Impressive DQAF

Measuring Data Quality for Ongoing Improvement: A Data Quality Assessment Framework by Laura Sebastian-Coleman (Morgan Kaufmann, ISBN: 978-0-12-397033-6) offers a ready-to-use framework for data quality measurement. Using the information in this book you can establish meaningful data quality measurements that will work across data storage systems and products. It helps to define appropriate controls that will contribute to improving the quality of data at any organization.

The book is divided into six sections. The first focuses on the concepts and definitions necessary to set the stage for the remainder of the topics. Section two introduces the DQAF (Data Quality Assessment Framework) and section three walks through data assessment scenarios. Section four of the book applies the DQAF to data requirements and section five discusses data strategy.

It is in section six where the DQAF is defined in depth. Functions and features of the DQAF are presented and then the final chapter offers the coup de grace, defining the 6 facets and 48 measurement types that comprise the DQAF.

As a business person, this book has forever changed the way I look at data, as well as my perspective on data that’s presented to me. When reading this book, 2 points in particular impressed me.

First, it’s true that Business and Technical (IT) people tend to view data differently. IT people tend towards the technical aspects of the data, whereas Business people don’t care so much about the numbers as they do about what the numbers say in terms of business impact. Sebastian-Coleman hits home on the “meeting of the minds” between IT and Business people so they can work together to get the most out of their data.

Second, the “data quality dimensions” are a key component in understanding the quality of your data. However, they are conceptual in nature and can be difficult to relate to, particularly for Business people. The DQAF (Data Quality Assessment Framework) outlined in this book presents a dissection of the “Data Quality Dimensions” into a practical, generic “menu” that can serve as a great starting point for any company to begin developing a set of measurements integral to a good data quality program.

This book is a “must read” for anyone - IT or Business - working in the data space today.

this is a really great book, especially if you're working in healthcare

Overall, this is a really great book, especially if you're working in healthcare. While there are data quality assessment frameworks available without buying an expensive book, the author has done a great job of making it relevant and useful (and not available on the internet so you have to buy the book).

Generally the book is easy to follow and comes with a lot of useful information. My one complaint is that there should be a website where you can pull diagrams and charts from the book (with license restrictions, of course), so that if I want to take them into a meeting and show them I don't have to recreate them from scratch.

Opaque and turgid.

Using George Orwell's old rule, let me see if I can translate some of Boyer's argument here into single-syllable words:

"As man comes from apes, he learns to see men's souls well. If you know man, you live: if not, you may die. Since to see men helps us live, we learn to see a Man in the Sky as well. And so come gods."

I learned less in forty pages of this book than four pages of William James, but suffered more in four pages than in 400 pages of James. Why do some "social scientists" seem to think they will be paid by the density of their language rather than clarity and fedundity of thought? An excellent reference text for Scrabble words, though.

Of course Boyer dismisses without thought the suggestion that religion might have a basis in any sort of evidence:

"I chose to ignore . . the theolgoical ecumenical approach . . . (which) holds that the assumptions on which many religious systems converge are in fact divinely inspired truths . . . " because he would rather "focus on more directly testable hypothesis."

Do I detech a wink and a nudge here? Of course, if you ignore the possibility of revelation, religioius ideas will appear natural by definition. But on what grounds do we reject a theory merely because the evidence for it may be indirect?

Anyway, I don't think you lose anything much by reading Boyer's more popular Religion Explained instead. It's not only far more readable, it's also one heck of a lot cheaper. I think he's largely mistaken there, too, but at least he is trying in that book to communicate with the reader.
