Vertebrate Endocrinology, by David O. Norris

One of the only books to discuss all vertebrates, the fourth edition of Vertebrate Endocrinology has been completely reorganized and updated to explore the intricate mechanisms that control human physiology and behavior as well as that of other vertebrate animals. Perfect for students in endocrinology, zoology, biology and physiology, it allows readers to gain both an understanding of the intricate relationships among all of the body systems and their regulation by hormones and other bioregulators, but also a sense of their development through evolutionary time as well as the roles of hormones at different stages of an animal’s life cycle.

Chapters have been reorganized to more closely follow traditional classroom presentation and extensive suggested readings are included at the end of each chapter allowing the reader to obtain further information as well as connect concepts to the literature on which the book is based. For the first time, this edition features four-color illustrations as well as an ancillary web site with additional materials for instructors.

* Provides a complete overview of the endocrine system of vertebrates by first emphasizing the mammalian system as the basis of most terminology and understanding of endocrine mechanisms and then applies that to non-mammals
* Introduces the reader to suitable concepts and explanation of jargon so that the reader will be able to delve directly into the primary literature on any endocrine-related topic with a background that will aid in their interpretation of new information
* Revised and updated chapter on The Molecular Bases for Chemical Regulation that now includes more evolutionary data
* Includes information on endocrine disrupting chemicals and their implications on the health of wildlife and humans
* Companion website includes additional teaching materials such as power point slides of all illustrations in the book

[It] is clearly written, judiciously illustrated, and ... carefully edited ... It contains a wealth of factual information ... A basic reference for professional research scientists ... [The] text admirably succeeds in stimulating the scientific curiosity of readers and in conveying a sense of fascination for the intricate mechanisms and importance of endocrinology."
--Pierre Deviche in GENERAL AND COMPARATIVE ENDOCRINOLOGY

About the Author
Dr. Norris has done research in environmental endocrinology and neuroendocrinology for more than 40 years, investigating the role of natural (e.g., photoperiod, temperature) and anthropogenic environmental factors (metals, pesticides, estrogens, industrial pollutants) on thyroid, adrenal, and reproductive endocrinology in regards to development, sexual maturation, seasonal reproduction, and aging. Most of his research has involved fishes and amphibians.

Has the real info.
By Kathleen Hunt
This is probably not a good textbook for an undergraduate course - it's too dense and wordy. However, for grad students or for a reference it's perfect. I'm a PhD researcher branching into thyroid hormones for the first time, and so I've been checking all the major endocrinology textbooks for their thyroid chapters, basically trying to get up to speed in a new field. This text has by far the most useful summary of thyroid structure and function that I could find anywhere. No, it's not incredibly easy to read - it's one of those books that I don't even try to tackle if I haven't got a full pot of coffee in arm's reach - but it's got the real info. There are a lot of useful little nuggets that I didn't find in other sources. Like, aha, at last I understand exactly what reverse-T3 is, and at last I understand euthyroid-sick syndrome and, oh, there's four kinds of goiter and not just one, aha.... The places where the text is "contradictory", which one reviewer mentioned above, I think are simply when it's accurately reporting contradictory results from different scientific studies. For a professional or grad student who needs the real info and not a watered-down oversimplified version, this is a great resource.

Maybe ok, but not for me
By kyle brandenberger
This book might be a good beginner reference. Unfortunately, the instructor who chose the book uses completely different terminology from the book making it completely useless to me.

Confusing, over-complicated.
By H. Pace
This book is awful. The text is often self-contradictory, and sentences are grammatically structured such that they can be very confusing. Also, the figures are all very technical and in black and white. My professor is currently using this book as an "experiment"; 2 weeks into the semester, I know the results!
