By almost any measurement, "The Simpsons" is the most influential television comedy ever created. It has been translated into every major language on Earth and dozens of minor ones; it has spawned entire genres of animation, and had more books written about it than all but a handful of American Presidents. Even its minor characters have become iconic, and the titular family is recognizable in almost every corner of the planet. It is a definitive and truly global cultural phenomenon, perhaps the biggest of the television age.
As of this writing, if you flip on FOX at 8pm on Sundays, you will see a program that bills itself as "The Simpsons". It is not "The Simpsons". That show, the landmark piece of American culture that debuted on 17 December 1989, went off the air more than a decade ago. The replacement is a hopelessly mediocre imitation that bears only a superficial resemblance to the original. It is the unwanted sequel, the stale spinoff, the creative dry hole that is kept pumping in the endless search for more money. It is Zombie Simpsons.

An excellent book for all TV fans
By Lenny
Charlie Sweatpants's writing is funny, easy to read and insightful. This is the perfect book for anyone who has spent time feeling sad over the decline of The Simpsons, but you don't have to agree with the central thesis or even by interested in The Simpsons to enjoy it. There's great commentary on American culture in here that is perfect for TV fans and haters of mediocrity.

Simpsons as zombies, and no, this isn't an episode of Treehouse of Horror....
By ac
...it's real. It's all too real. The Simpsons went from the greatest show in the history of television to a show that only has a few basic elements reminding us it's still The Simpsons. Of those few remaining elements... there's still the characters, but they all act in bizarre, nonsensical, and often downright WRONG ways. Everyone's still yellow, though it's a weird ugly computer-yellow which is a good metaphor for how stiff and ugly and a bit too clean the rest of the show looks. There's the theme song, which once was replaced by Ke$ha's "Tik-Tok" in the opening, of all the horrible songs you can think to replace Danny Elfman's classic piece of music. Beyond that, there's still humor, or their attempts at it.
The fact is, the show just isn't funny. This is a show that used to be hilarious. Groundbreaking. It used to be edgy. Couch gags were quick and clever instead of drawn out to waste time. Guest star usually weren't just flavor-of-the-week pop culture stalwarts you will forget about by the end of the episode, their purpose in an episode usually only to introduce themselves and agree with Bart or Homer or something. Chalkboard gags reference all sorts of forgettable pop culture minutiae. 1989 characters who almost never show any signs of "growth" or "character development" suddenly exist in a world with Wiis, Iphones, and any other kind of new technology you can think of. Sure, the show has always had guest stars and pop culture references, but you didn't need to know the reference to get the joke in most cases. Also, there were ACTUAL jokes, actual parodies here and there. The show now coasts by only on references, like animating something in a Pixar fashion but with nothing clever attached. THIS is not parody, and it's not very amusing beyond, "Oh, I get the reference. Huh."
Face it, the show has been falling apart for years. Writers leaving, changing creative control, money meddling, changing pop culture climate, the cost of doing the show, egos, strikes, the fact that it seems like they just ran out of ideas... it doesn't seem like any one particular reason contributed to the show basically going from the greatest work of art ever created for American television, to the most unwatchable dreck currently on television. Perhaps that's why it's been so difficult thus far to sum up exactly why the show sucks. But this book, Zombie Simpsons: How the Best Show Ever Became the Broadcasting Undead does the near-impossible and tries to sort out the problems, show the decline in a very well-written, intelligent way. It's very successful in its mission.
See, most articles about The "New" Simpsons simply says "The show's not funny!" anymore. Why? "The show doesn't make me laugh anymore!" and then you might have someone blame themselves... "oh, maybe it's because I'm older... maybe I just lost interest..." la la la la. This book tries to get to the root of the problem and reveal quite a few reason why the show, genuinely, jut doesn't work anymore. While there are some opinions here and there, this book mainly gets by on pure facts, often using shocking graphs and numbers to give some points across, or to at least make you sit and think in ways you never thought before.
The writer has been a Simpsons fan/Zombie Simpsons nonfan for most of his life and he is clearly an expert on the show. John Ortved's unauthorized book about the decline of the show (also available here on amazon) had some interesting stories and was well-written enough, but it didn't really read like the work of a superfan at times, with plenty of errors regarding characters and stories and history. It was a quick-reading book, but it started going downhill as it covered the years when the show really starting waning. Consider THIS book, then, the missing chapters from Ortved's book, with some very clear reasons why the decline happened. This book puts all the negatives into perspective by having a lot of relevant information on the Golden Years, and pre-Simpsons television.
I'm sure some will complain that certain points are glossed over, but this really is a book for people who are already hardcore fans. Despite a few history lessons, Mr. Sweatpants doesn't feel the need to dwell on points most serious Simpsons fans have read (or watched, or listened to in audio commentaries, etc) a million times. Sweatpants gets in, says his piece, and gets out.
The writing is astounding and addicting. You won't be able to put this down. You will be witness to a variety of reasons why the show is a failure now, yet also why it continues to be on the air. It's a very eye-opening read. Very informed, and informative.
Yep, I highly reccomend picking this up, and also following Charlie's blog, where he does assessments of recent Zombie episodes. He is about as unbiased as they come; he'll admit when they had the right idea, the stray decent concept or line or sign joke, he's not an attention baiting troll saying "SIMPSONS SUCKS! FAIL! FAIL! FAIL!" without any real reasoning behind his thoughts.
If you're a hardcore Simpsons fan but hate the modern age, this is the book for you.

Mmmm charts...
By Don Williams
Firstly, a book about how bad The Simpsons episodes have become could easily be waved off as simple 'opinion', but Charlie does a nice job of incorporating science, facts, history, interviews, and, mmmm charts..., to show a clear delineation between why and how The Simpsons were so great, and why and how The Simpsons became a Zombified shell of it's former self.
Secondly, I was pleasantly surprised that for a book whose premise is from an apparently negative perspective... about 90% of the content is from that place of glowing love of The Simpsons that we all have, and there are just enough examples and reminders of Zombie Simpsons episodes to show the horrific decline and prove the point.
In summary, if you've ever wondered why The Simpsons isn't funny anymore, check out the book.
