While it carries no edition statement, this book has been published since at least 1990. The author's intent was to compile a quick-reference handbook for use by travel industry personnel. As a former travel agent, tour company representative, and travel industry instructor, Dervaes relied upon her experience as the gauge for determining the style and content of this work. The idea is excellent; unfortunately, the book misses its mark. It contains a concise specialized dictionary, with brief definitions of travel terms and abbreviations. For example, pool route is defined as "When two carriers share equally their facilities, total revenues, and borrow planes and crews from each other." STCR is a code for "stretcher passenger." Many of the 6,000 terms defined are common words that could be found in a standard dictionary: brothel, cavern, harbor. Appendixes contain time zone and metric conversion charts, international clothing sizes, a smattering of geographic world facts (major rivers, deserts, ship canals, islands, continents), all of which can be found readily in commonly used reference sources. The numerous lists of specialized codes appears to be the most important information this guide has to offer. Here are codes for airlines, airports around the world, cities, countries, currencies, car rentals, hotels, credit cards, airfares, and special meals.
The Travel Dictionary is best left to travel and tourism personnel. Libraries will be wise to continue to rely on standard sources such as Travel Industry Personnel Directory and the Official Airlines Guide for this information.
